Is WW better than MFP or Loseit?

I'm trying to figure out what diet plan I want to start with and stick with.  I was inclined to do WW, but it's not cheap.  ;) Is there an advantage to doing WW and counting points rather than just calories through a free program or app?

Re: Is WW better than MFP or Loseit?

  • I think it is really an individual preference.  I prefer MFP over WW - I guess it's that I prefer actual calorie breakdown over points and I can see the breakdown between fat, carbs & protein among other things.  I haven't given WW a second thought since I quit when I found out I was pregnant, so can't properly compare the two and I have never tried Loseit.

  • Loseit and MFP are not really diet plans, you only track you calorie intake and how much you burnt. DH and I have used Lose It with great results, MFP is essentially the same. The only downside, is that these apps don't care where you calories come from, you can eat a big mac for lunch and not eat dinner and stay within your calorie budget for the day. So overall it does make it possible for an unbalanced diet. If your health insurance covers a nutrition counseling, you can use that to get a diet plan and then count your calories by using Lose It or MFP.
  • I am currently on WW and am much more motivated and committed than when I did MFP (never tried Loseit). I find the support much better (I am going to meetings) and I am much more accountable this way.

I think it is largely down to personal preference - part of it for me is spending the $ makes me feel like I can't quit or it would be a 'waste'.

  • It's about personal accountability.  WW hands you the resources you need, the tools to reach your goals and sets up face-to-face time to ensure you reach your goals.  If you need your hand held this much, it's a good investment.

If you know what you want and have the motivation to find the resources and acquire the tools you need to get there by yourself, you don't need WW.

  • I lost over 50 pounds with Lose It. I've tried WW before and had success, but I never did meetings - only WW online. For me, Lose It offered the same benefits for free. Can't beat that!

Maybe try one of the free ones and see how it goes before spending the $ on WW.

  • I gained 75lb while pregnant and lost 73 using MFP. I stopped using it and gained back some of the weight so I started using it again a few days ago. Yes you can eat a Big Mac and still stay within your calorie intake, but I you actually look at the break down at the end of the day of all of your protein, fats, sugars, etc....you would see where you went over with that Big Mac. My current problem is sugars, I have a hard time keeping my sugars down even when I am eating what I think are healthy foods. So not only do I make sure that I am eating right, I am trying to match up what my proteins, fats, sugars, calories, etc....should be for the day according to the chart.

Another thing that helps, is filling out your chart the day before so you can see where you need to eliminate some things or replace with another to get within your chart goal. Then you can refer back to it throughout the day to see what to eat next since it is already written out. Another thing I like to do is not add in my exercise until right before I go to bed. Say you burn 200 calories, it will factor it into your chart, saying you earned more calories, and you can eat more. But you don't want to eat those calories earned if you are losing weight. If you are adding the exercise in as you go but don't want to eat those calories, it will make it harder to keep track of your daily calories separate from your earned ones. That's why I don't put the exercise in until I go to bed and then I am not going to get back up and eat those calories I already burned.

  • I did MFP at the beginning of the year and lost 5 pounds (I only have 10 to lose). I was doing great until I went on vacation. I ended up gaining those 5 back and 4 more. (Not just on vacation but over the last few months). All my fault. I just didn't have the motivation to get back on track.

I had done WW before with success but didn't really want to pay for what I got for free with MFP. But my mom has lost 65+ pounds in a year with WW so I decided to give it another go. I HAVE to attend meeting to keep myself accountable and to hear others stories. I had my 3rd WI since starting yesterday and I'm down 4.5 pounds. I really do love WW, especially for the meetings. I need them. It's like overeaters anonymous for me.
