Moms who's babies hate to be swaddled

Jackson hates to be swaddled no matter what method we've tried. Bit he startles himself awake if we lay him down to sleep. He sleeps great if we're holding him and does ok in his swing. But he's started sliding to the bottom of the swing and if I hook him in he wakes up and screams and nothing will calm him down except for being picked up. He's almost 4 weeks old. What helps?

  • My LO does not love being swaddled either... At first! He screams and you can tell he's just downright pissed when we strap him in initially. However, once we get him in with his arms down and we pick him up and snuggle for a minute, he calms right down and is MUCH happier! We had given up swaddling after the first week because he seemed to hate it so much, but I tried it again two weeks ago and it has been working ever since! I finally was able to get him to sleep somewhere other than on my chest, and it is glorious!! Maybe just give it some time and keep trying... It worked for us! Oh, and we use the swaddleme sacks with the Velcro... GL!!

Hmm. Maybe I'll have to try again with DS.

  • If I swaddle I use a halo sleep sack with the swaddle attached. I wait until he falls asleep, lay him down and then Velcro him shut!

    Same.

My baby hates swaddling. So if I do swaddle him, it's after he's already asleep.

  • We struggle with swaddling too. I just ordered a woombie. I'm hoping he likes it.

  • Mine didn't seem to like it either, she would squirm and break an arm out. Once we figure out how to use the miracle blanket properly, and swaddle super tight, it's as thought iota what she's always wanted, once she is swaddled and picked up that is.

  • DS hates being swaddled if he's awake. However, he loves it once he's already asleep or drowsy. I usually nurse him to sleep, cuddle him and then swaddle him and put him down in PNP. He sleeps great.

This!  I doubt very many babies love being swaddled.  With both of mine we swaddled them and they'd fight it initially but then calm down and sleep longer than they were when they were unswaddled.

  • We were convinced DS hated being swaddled....then his therapist said he needed to be swaddled at least one nap a day to give his brain a chance to heal (otherwise he's flinging his arms around and so his brain is still firing even if he appears to be asleep), so I started swaddling him once a day and realized how well he slept when swaddled (he did fight it at first, but I swaddled him and then rocked him/gave him his pacifier as needed).  Now, we swaddle at night no matter what and sometimes for naps (he naps in his swing a lot, so obviously I don't swaddle him then)....he is mostly used to it now and has stopped fighting it at night (if he is crabby/overtired he will sometimes fight it at naptime).  We use the Halo sleepsack/swaddles and sometimes he does break out of it (usually only one arm), but the flaps stay attached so he is never at any risk of being covered on his face like he might be with a blanket (plus I suck at swaddling with a blanket...).

  • I don't really have any advice for you except don't let me get in the habit of falling asleep in your arms.  Already at 7 weeks, we're having to do to sleep training because I made the mistake of letting him sleep on me and that became the only place he would sleep.

DS hates to be swaddled because he likes to spread his arms REALLY wide and we had to give up on it. We just lay a blanket over his legs and very loosely wrap it around him when he sleeps. (Bad. I know. But it works.)

This is key for us too. He doesn't love being swaddled, but it's alot easier when he's asleep to get him swaddled. We have been using some that we got from BRU as a gift. They have velcro on them and are called "Swaddle me". They are super easy to use.

  • Croix doesn't like to be swaddled either, I don't give him a choice. Like other posters have said he doesn't care for it at 1st, but once he calms down all of us get a good night sleep. I would say just stay with it.
