Feeding Length

My son will be 7 weeks old tomorrow and is taking 5.5 ounces. It was taking him 45 min to an hour to eat and he seemed hungry about every 1.5 to 2 hours. So I talked to a nurse and she said to change from the slow nipple to a medium nipple and feed him every 3 to 4 hours. We changed him today and now it takes 10 to 15 min to eat. My question is...is this too fast for a feeding?

Re: Feeding Length

  • I know it's probably different since I mostly breast feed, but DS only nurses for about 10 mins now, and that started at about 7ish weeks old.

He gets 4 or 5oz when he gets a bottle and he is still on size 1 nipples and it only takes him 10 or 15 mins to finish.

So it all sounds fine to me.

  • Is he spitting up or having a lot of gas now that his feedings are shorter? If not then I am sure it's ok. We didn't change the flow of the nipples until around 2 or 3 months (can't remember) but we did it when she was taking 30 min to finish and falling asleep on the bottle because the sucking was wearing her out.
