2nd Trimester

Voluntary Unpaid Vacation until further notice...

Thats what i was told i'm doing as of this upcoming Monday. Holy Crap.

I work for a construction company and the banks are funding... this is some scary sh*t. I'm getting 2 more paychecks and then will be waiting for the call to come back to work after the banks start funding again.

I suddenly have to urge to start returning maternity clothes.

Re: Voluntary Unpaid Vacation until further notice...

  • Ick that sounds crummy! Sorry you're having to deal with that! Hopefully they'll call you again soon!

BTW, how is it voluntary if they told you that is what you are doing...?

  • Loading the player...
  • Eeek. I'm sorry. I work for my dads construction company but luckily we haven't had any lack of work (we're actually really really busy). I know that a lot of companies we subcontract have no work and lots of people are on unemployment and barely scraping up enough side jobs.
  • correction **the banks ARE NOT funding.

  • Is this some sort of way to get out of paying you unemployment??

  • Yikes, that's scary!  Hopefully they call you back soon.
  • holy crap! I am so sorry!

Thats what it is. It's shady of the bosses to do this. My dad has been hiring a lot of guys who's bosses do this and just pay them under the table for masonry work, painting, roofing, etc.

  • Sorry...That sucks...This is happening everywhere it seems!  So scary!

  • Yikes!  It's happened to my BIL too and he's an executive.  They are doing mandatory unpaid vacation weeks, so he goes to work about every other week right now.

  • Wow, that doesn't sound very voluntary.
  • Doesn't seem voluntary if you have no choice but that's just me
  • Thanks ladies.. yeah this is crazy. I think my boss said it's voluntary because 1) he doesn't want me to go find another job and 2) he really believes it will only be a few weeks. he's had people that are really devoted to him so they would work part time unpaid for awhile if they needed to. He can be quite generous to people that stick tough times out.

The crazy thing is that i recently got a call from a superintendent at one of our subcontractors letting me know they'd love to have me there.. but all i could think about what how hard it would be to switch jobs half way through a pregnancy and then go on maternity leave.. especially since i only want to work part time after we have our boy.

Lots of stuff to think about now!

  • This just happened to my husband, a landscape architect. No $$ --> no building --> no work. He's been cut to 60% time for December... in January, he may not have any work.

  • Could this be conisdered a lay off so you can collect unemployment??

FYI the employer would not be doing taking voluntary unpaid vaca to get out of paying unemployement, as an employee a portion of your tax money goes into the state unemployement fund and that is where unemployment pay comes from, it does not come from the employer after you are laid off or fired

  • Wow, I am so sorry to hear that! I hope you get a call really soon that you can start working again.
  • Yes, but a company will pay a higher unemployment tax rate based on how many people they have go on unemployment.  So it is to their advantage to not have this happen.
  • very interesting.. our company is really small. There are only 5 including my boss that work in the office. Sounds like everyone is going to be taking this "vacation" until further notice.

  • i'm sorry. my H just got told no overtime no matter what.. and apparantly his group is going to be going through some lay offs before christmas. he's first on the chopping block cuz he is a contractor. it sucks! at least i know why i couldn't get on with them when i tried last month. hiring freeze. this all just sucks for everyone. it sounds like your boss is trying really hard to let anyone go and thats always a good thing.
  • Yup we've just been told we're going to be initiating involuntary furloughs, too. everyone will have to take 2 weeks off unpaid, on a rotating basis. At least they're not being a$$hole enough to call it "voluntary"!
