DS will be about 19 or 20 months old when this LO is born. We intend on the new baby sleeping in a bassinet in our room till he/she is sleeping though the night. DS slept through the night at 6 weeks, fingers crossed for this one! Anyways, both kids will share a room after we move the baby out of our room. My question is, should we get a second crib or a toddler bed for DS? I have no clue when kids start sleeping in a toddler bed but don't want to buy a second crib if DS can do without a crib. Thoughts? Advice?

Both of my boys were in a toddlers bed after they turned one although they both hated the crib and slept with us til they were one. I know your not supposed to do that but you gotta do what you gotta do to get some sleep.

Did they stay in bed? I'm just worried DS will get out and wake up the baby.

DD will be 27m when this LO is born, and we have the exact same plan as you. Baby number two will sleep in our room until he/she is sleeping through the night, then will go into DD's room.
We're getting a second crib. I'm keeping DD in her crib as long a possible, lol. Once she's used to having the baby in her room, we'll transition her to a toddler bed; her crib converts to one. She is 19m now and sleeps great at night, but I don't doubt that she'd get out of bed frequently if she could. I'm not ready for that and I think the transition to room sharing will be easier if she's still jailed.
We have an 18 month old. Our plan is to move Henry to a new room in a few months and do a "floor bed" for him and recycle the current crib (as well as all the nursery stuff) for baby 2.
I don't like the idea of spending money on a toddler bed and since we are raising Henry according to Montessori principals I've done some research on "floor beds" and it seems like a nice idea. Basically you use a matress and put it on the floor (with carpets around) and just let the child sleep here. Allows for independence and is very safe and they are only a few inches off the ground.
We are going to use a twin mattress that we're already using in the guest room just get rid of box spring and frame.
I'm really worried about him getting out of bed and wandering around his room at night so we'll make sure to have his room all babyproofed and give ourselves some time to adjust so he's used to new set up before June. That is the plan but I'm sure it won't go as I picture it in my head
Good luck!

DS started climbing out of his crib at 19-20 months. We got a toddler bed really cheap and he is now sleeping in there. It is really low to the floor and he gets in and out all by himself. He has done very well staying in his bed for the most part. The first couple nights were a little more difficult, but after the first week he has been great. Nap times are still a struggle at times.
We plan to move DS to his "new big boy" room before the baby comes. I've read that the now older sibling may feel as though the baby is taking everything away if you move them after the baby comes. Don't know if it is true but since DS will be 2 in January we are moving him them. Gives me 6 months to clean, rearrange, and maybe repaint the nursery. Since we went gender neutral on the nursery we will just reuse everything.
My DS was in his crib til he was 3. Never tried climbing out either, so I had no issue with leaving him in it. We'll see with DD, but if she isn't trying to climb out by the time this one comes, my sister will just give me her crib. Her 3rd (21 months) never slept in it, so she doesn't need it!
Mom to a 16 year old boy too!!
Me: 36-PCOS DH: 34 All good.
TTC #3 since 2/12. IUI's 1st BFN, 2nd BFP: 9/22/12...M/C 11/6 10wks 1day.....3 more rounds of IUI Feb-April '13 all BFN.
Started taking Femaprin & Milk Thistle Aug '13, then added Metformin Sept '13......Surprise BFP 10/26/13!!!! The first time in 10 years that we got a BFP without infertility treatments!
My daughter is 2 1/2 and still sleeping in her crib. She'll be getting a toddler bed soon, but there's no way I would have put her in a toddler bed at 19-20 months. I just wouldn't want to deal with her getting out of bed in the middle of the night or whatever.

Oiye! So many different opinions!! I have no idea what we will do now! I did think about just doing a twin bed instead of a toddler bes but would rather keep extra space in their room since it doubles as their playroom also. I'm am still so worried I'll be dealing with him getting out of bed at night.

My biggest concern with one in a toddler bed and the other in a crib is that the one in the crib is fair and captive game for the free one. DS and DD will share as soon as this 3rd kiddo arrives and DS will come out of his crib and go into a toddler bed. If it were me I would leave your DS in a crib when he begins sharing with baby. I worry about toys being thrown into the crib or climbing into the crib to be with the baby.
DS slept in the RnP in my room until he was about 6 months old and rolling over. Then I transitioned him to the crib. He will be about 21 months when DC2 arrives, so I figure I have about 5-6 months after that to really decide what to do.
At the moment, my plan is to convert his crib to a toddler bed when he seems ready for that, then move him to a twin when DC2 is ready for the crib. I don't think DH wants to buy a second crib.

The first couple of nights was rough but after that they were fine.
It all depends on the kiddo. We converted the crib to a toddler bed around 20 months with no issues at all. She even stays in her bed for up to 30 minutes after waking up. But, not all kids handle the change well.
And honestly, I wouldn't buy a toddler bed. I'd go right to a twin, or whatever size you plan to use. You may want to try the switch before baby 2 comes to see how he does in a big bed.
