anybody else with a jaundiced L/O?

This is a question post as well as a slight vent just about minor inconveniences.

If your little one has jaundice, what kind of treatment is he/she getting for it?

Will had his 1st checkup yesterday and the first thing the pediatrician said was wow little guy, you are yellow!!  So what should have been a routine well-baby visit and circumcision turned into a trip to the lab at the hospital for a heel stick.

Apparently it wasn't super-serious at that time, because we didn't get a photo blanket to take home, and didn't have to be admitted. The doctor was guestimating his levels at around 16-17, but they were only 14.4.

We had to go back to the lab for another heel stick this morning and then I took him home and we sat in the sun in the living room for about an hour, him in just his diaper. (By the way, boppies are amazing!, I usually use mine to prop him up while BFing, but today I spread a cozy crochet blanket on the carpet in a patch of sunlight, put the boppy on that, and put a nice, flannel receiving blanket over that so the hole in the middle didn't swallow him, and he soaked up the sun for about an hour as happy as my cat.) The cat was confused as to why the baby was in HIS patch of sunlight though  .

Just found his levels are down to 13.3 today, which is good. We have to go back in the morning for another heel stick, but I think if his levels are good then, then we can just keep up sunlight therapy instead of the photo blanket or bed.  Fingers crossed for that.

I think the most upsetting part of this is having to take him to get his little heel stuck 3 days in a row. It breaks my heart! Yesterday I held him and bawled the whole time he did.  The lab tech was much better today and did it in 1/2 the time and he seemed like it hurt less (or maybe just his outfit was better because he didn't have to strip down to his onesie- my little guy HATES being cold.)

Getting to the lab is a little tricky as well because I am on a 3 week driving ban because of my c-section, and my parents won't drive my car (nervous about wrecking it,)  and they brought their 2 door car so I can't get my chicco key fit seat in it, so DH has to take time off of work to drive me and Will to the lab.

Anyway, sorry about the rabbit trail there- but not being able to drive is a bit frustrating.

  • Yes- My baby is a little over two weeks old and she had jaundice- quite bad actually. I was getting concerned because when we took her home from the hospital to about day 6, her whites of her eyes looked yellow and she was not feeding well. I took her in and the hospital immediately admitted her-- her billirubin count was 24! Talk about feeling like a horrible mother for not getting her in to the hospital sooner! Anyway they kept her in the hospital for 24 hours under some lights and did multiple heel pricks :( After the 24 hours, her count was at 16. They sent us home with a billi bed and billi wand (bed that has lights and a wand thing that has a light at the end of it) and we used that for 2 days and had her levels checked again and they were at 12--- such a scary thing!

  • Aww, sorry to hear you're going through this! Our little guy was jaundice and they told us to feed him as much as possible ie: every hour if possible and put him in the sun throughout the day. It cleared up on its on in 8 days. Good luck!!!

  • This LO isn't jaundiced, but DS was.  What you're going through sounds pretty much exactly like what we went through with him.  3-4 days in a row of bloodwork to check his bilirubin levels, lots of exposure to sunlight (really hard in January! LOL), and lots & lots of nursing.  His levels dropped steadily, so we never had to do anything other than sunlight & nursing as therapy.

(FWIW, I drove DS to his last bilirubin check by myself @ less than a week post-c/s.  My OB said as long as I wasn't taking the vicodin anymore & it was a short drive, I was fine to drive as soon as I felt up to it.)

  • Yep! DS1 had it pretty bad when he was born and spent 24 hours under the lights. He was still discharged 2 days after birth, but when he saw his pediatrician at 3 days old, he went back to get levels drawn and immediately had to go back into the hospital for 24 hours more. After that, he was still a little yellow, but he was fine. I only witnessed the heel prick on him twice.

DS2 was a different story. He was put under the lights when he was in the NICU the day he was born, and he stayed there until he was discharged at 2 days old. Even though they discharged him, they sent a photo bed home with us. They would have kept him in the hospital but they had already discharged me and didn't have a room for me to board in... I feel like I lived at my pedi's office for the first 2 weeks and was getting the heel pricks mostly every day. At 5 days old, the pedi took him off the photo bed, but at 9 days old I noticed he looked really yellow again, so I took him back to the pedi and the next day his levels were a 19 (pedi wasn't comfortable with them going above 20), so he went back on the photo bed until he was 15 days old. At 16 days old, he was at a 10.9, so he's been off it since then, but holy cow, it was such a pain! He's still a tiny bit yellow, but the pedi says it's no longer anything to worry about since he's a few weeks old and his levels aren't dangerous. My boys seem to get it bad because of blood type incompatability. They are both A+ like my hubby. I'm O-.

  • Jaundice is a PITA! DS's levels were at 17 when the pedi checked at 4 days old. He was put on a billi blanket at home. I'm very thankful he didn't have to be hospitalized, but that thing made adjusting to life with a newborn extra difficult. He was on it for 3 days and during that time we had a nurse come to our house to do the heel pricks. Thankfully his levels dropped fairly quickly and we haven't had any issues since.

  • Mine seems to be a blood-type incompatibility as well. Mine is O+ and little one's is not.  (I am not sure what his is, but it's not O.)
