FTM Doula question

Hello, I am new to the board. I am a FTM and my husband and I are expecting our son in February. We have signed up for birthing classes but they do not begin until the week before Thanksgiving. When do you all suggest we start interviewing doulas? I considered waiting until we attend our first birthing class but I am concerned that the hustle and bustle of the holidays will be an issue. I appreciate any and all advice!

Re: FTM Doula question

  • I'm a FTM, but we interviewed our doula at 20weeks (same day as our u/s).  Loved her and am so thankful she'll be joining us.  We decided to skip birthing classes (though I'll be doing some reading) since DH works retail (for a TV retailer) and things are already busy and will only get more crazy until after the superbowl.  I definitely don't think it's too early to start now!

  • I would do it when you are around 20 weeks.  You do not want to wait too long because most doulas will only take 1 -2 clients a month.  By booking early you will be able to pick the doula you feel most comfortable with. Set up some interviews so that you can meet the doula and get a feel for their personality and their compatibility with you! GL!
  • I'm not sure the thought behind waiting to start the process but I'm of the mind that its never too early. Doulas' schedules fill up quickly so you want the greatest chance at finding one you like with openings. Waiting limits those chances.
  • I agree with all of the above!  It's never too early to start looking; most doulas don't take too many clients since they don't want to risk overlapping labors.  If you find one you love, you'll want to book her early so she'll have your EDD on her calendar ASAP!

  • If you know you want one, I'd interview now. You can save your pre-birth sessions until closer to your due date, but you want to get on her calendar before she's booked.
  • We just interviewed our doula last night and I'm about 15 weeks. However, we knew who we wanted and she's in high demand in our city; we didn't want her to book up! I agree with the other posts that say the earlier the better. Cross something off the list :) Good luck!!
