June 2013 Moms

My baby just fell off the couch! :(

And I just feel like a horrible mama!

I called his doctor and they asked about how he was acting and such and they said he should be fine but if he starts to act oddly, or begins vomiting, acting extremely drowsy, or a list of other odd things then I should bring him to a hospital.

I am still so worried though, like how do you know with a head injury? He could be okay now...

Ugh, I am a worried mess. Worse part is, I left just to get some juice from the kitchen. 2 seconds! He was asleep. I put pillows on the floor and everything because I am such a spazz and that didn't help because he somehow fell and missed the pillows. He literally fell as I was walking into the den. I witnessed the entire thing which doesn't help at all, it only makes me feel worse.

Please someone help me out here. Tell me I am not horrible, mistakes happen, and he is going to fine, because I feel like the worst mother of the year right now.

  • Don't beat yourself up! Babies are actually incredibly resilient and they are designed so that falls from their height or less don't injure them (think about the falls they take while learning to walk!)--and a fall from a couch is relatively low!! And as the mom of a toddler, I can assure you that this will be just one of many tumbles and scrapes and you will be surprised at how quickly they bounce right back and get on with playing as if nothing happened!

  • Try to relax! You're not a bad mom! This is the first of many, many head bumps. DD bonks her head about twelve times a day in twelve different ways nowadays. Kids are super resilient. Take the doctors' orders and watch him; I'm sure he'll be fine.

  • Thanks guys, seriously the reassurance helps. I just feel so worried.

He is very alert and active and only seems frustrated that I won't play with him.

He freaked me out because he was laughing like 3 minutes after it happened. He literally cried for 20 seconds. I ran in and picked him up, he had only just fell and he cried for less than a minute then calmed down because I had him. He then proceeded to calm down and laugh.

  • Welcome to the club! My dumbass had DD in a bumbo on the counter (serious duh moment) and when I turned to hand DH the baby food, she squirmed out and fell on the hardwood floors. I was amazed at how fast we were out the door and at urgent care. She was totally fine, and somehow didn't even have a bump on her head! So yeah, there are worse mamas out there :)

  • Aww, don't stress Hon! Sorry to tell you, but this is the first of many head bumps!! If he just fell from the couch to the floor he will be just fine!! All mamas feel this way when LO gets hurt.
The great thing about babies is that they are really tough hard to break!!

  • Both my boys have fallen of our bed. DS1 rolled off by his self and DS2 fell when he was sleeping on DH. DH forgot and rolled over, DS2 was about 2 months old and he only cried for a few minutes.

  • my son fell down an entire flight of stairs at about 9 months.  He fell down a few to the landing, and then down the rest- I freaked but he was fine, only a teeny tiny scratch on his nose.  Now you know that can happen- and you hopefully won't let it happen again.

  • He'll be ok, don't beat yourself up.  Babies are really pretty bouncy.  ;)

My DS crawled off the bed--head first onto my hardwood floor-- at about the same age.  I had no idea he was mobile yet, he hadn't done it at home before.  And I was literally standing right in front of him, he was in the middle of the bed, I turned around to grab something out of the closet and **THUD** Worst sound ever.

My big boy is bounding towards 4! Baby brother coming in October!

Maybe he just cried because he was startled & not hurt.

He had that "WOAH where's the rest of the couch!" panic!

Just keep an eye on him but Im sure he's fine!

This. You're probably right and I am probably freaking out more than necessary.

And no I would never let it happen again.  As previously stated I am a spazz, and as my husband points out a constant worrier of those around me. I worry about everything and tend to be very overprotective of everybody that I love.

Thanks guys, again. I don't know if I can thank you all enough for being amazingly reassuring. He is sitting up and playing with toys right now.

Lesson learned on my part. :)

  • Welcome to the club! Once your baby becomes mobile, accidents start happening.  They are much more resilient than you think.  I mean don't go throwing him off of things, but accidents happen.  My DD fell down after pulling herself up the other day.  She didn't realize to sit, so she fell like a plank and of course hit her head on the hardwood.  She's just fine.

Be sure that his eyes are tracking properly and all of what your doctor said.  In general, bumps and bruises are ok.  Dents are not.  If he isn't fussy or crying, he is likely fine.  It is rare that injuries occur at couch height, especially on a carpeted floor.
