Febrile Seizures

With our little ones quickly approaching 6 months, some of them in day care, and their first winter coming, I wanted to share some info on febrile seizures.

https://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/febrile_seizures/detail_febrile_seizures.htm

DD#1 had one on Saturday at 8pm after waking up from a nap at 4pm with a small fever and a little flushed. We gave her tylenol and she was back to running around in no time. After her bath at 7pm, she was still warm and her temp was around 100.2 at 7:15pm (taken at home). She fell asleep on the couch and woke up sounding like she was going to throw up, but then her eyes rolled back, her legs went into the air, and it looked like she had stopped breathing. DH grabbed her, took her outside to get some cooler air on her and I called 911. They came, checked her heart rate and oxygen and took her to our local Children's Hospital. At this point, she was awake and crying (which they said was good news).

They took her temp there around 9:15pm and it had quickly spiked to 103.7. They gave her motrin, she had some blood work and urine samples (to check for a bacterial infection) and everything came back fine. We took her home that night and she slept in our bed so we could watch her. We woke her up every 3 hours for more temp checks and rotated tylenol and motrin. She was pretty out of it Sunday and Monday morning, but seems more like her old self today.

It was by far the scariest thing that has happened to either of my girls and it's pretty common- happens to 1 in every 25 kids under the age of 6. We have no family history of this so the above link was very helpful to us after the fact. Hopefully it can help everyone that wants to read about them.

Re: Febrile Seizures

  • Wow! I can't even imagine how scary that must have been. I'm glad to hear she is doing better, and I hope she gets back to 100% soon.

    Thanks for sharing the info!

  • my niece ( who was born 6 weeks early) had 2 when she was very young.  very scary and definitely something parents need to be aware of- thanks for posting!
  • I'm an ER nurse, and see them pretty frequently. While they are terrifying, they are actually the bodies way of protecting itself. Sometimes little ones temp shoots up really quickly, and this is the bodies way of hitting a "reset" button, so to speak. They DO NOT mean your child will have any kind of seizure disorder as a child/adult.
