Rice cereal and Constipation?

We tried rice cereal with DS last week, and it seemed like he was constipated for days. When he was finally able to have a BM, it was the consistency of play-doh for a couple of days. He is finally back to normal, but I am nervous to try rice cereal again. Has anyone else experienced this? Does it go away over time, or should I try oatmeal cereal instead?

Re: Rice cereal and Constipation?

  • I have heard cereal can cause constipation. I'm not sure if it is just rice and not oatmeal, but it could be worth a try, or you could go right into fruits and veggies, just stick to the list of fruits and veggies with low allergic reactions (carrots, peas, squash/pumpkin, apples, bananas, pears, etc.)

  • That is EXACTLY what happened to my daughter. She has to consume rice cereal every day as part of her reflux treatment, and for the first week she had a brown/green bowel movement every three days with the consistency of clay. It must have been acidic because she cried a lot. I felt horrible for her, but she got over it after three bm's. Her doctor said you can expect the addition of any new food to cause some potential tummy problems at first. I personally think that in the case of fortified rice cereal it is the iron that causes temporary binding. She digests it very well now and it didn't take her long to adjust.
  • Our pedi said we could give LO a little pear or prune juice if he seems constipated.

  • Oatmeal is much better.  Also, maybe try a different brand.  My son has been on rice cereal since 2 months due to reflux.  He's ok with a little tiny bit of Gerber, but I bought Beechnut and OMG! I thought I was going to have to take him to the Dr because he was so constipated.

He really likes the oatmeal, but you can't feed it through a bottle.  You have to feed it by spoon.

They also have wheat.  We haven't tried that yet, but that may be our next experience.

  • It is the iron in the cereal.  Around the age of 6 months, the iron levels begin to decrease, so they will need other sources of iron (like cereal).  If your LO is under 6 months, you can just switch to a cereal without iron.
  • Just remember, all your LO needs for the first year is BM or formula, so you can always put off the solids until he's a little bigger.  He may do better in a couple months.  Also, egg yolk (cooked of course) and avocado are good sources of iron, so good first foods.  Maybe he would do better with one of those.  Less processed too!
