Hello all. I don't plan to gross anyone out, so sorry if I do. I have a cyst on my scalp that's been there for as long as I can remember. My doctor's checked it and says it's a sebaceous cyst and the most common location for them is the scalp. It's not threatening my health or anything, so I haven't had it removed. However, it's big enough that sometimes when I wear my hair down, it shows (my hair was thick while I was pregnant but thinned a bit after I had DS) and if I hit my head and I hit the cyst, it HURTS!
My question is, have any of you had a similar cyst removed and if so:
1. Did it hurt?
2. Did it leave a noticeable scar?
3. How long did it take to recover/until the pain went away?
TIA!
Re: Cyst removal? (NTR)
My husband had two of these on his back- the first time he had an HMO and they kept stalling on his referral until the cyst was huge, swollen, and infected and it did leave a pretty big scar on his back. The second time we went in right away while the cyst was still small and they took it out and the scar is barely noticeable. I would think under your hair you wouldn't be able to see it at all.
When they removed it, the injected lidocaine around the cyst, so there were little pricks for the needle. After that set in, he really didn't feel anything except tugging when they were putting the stitches in, but it didn't hurt.
He had steri-strips over his stitches and the strips fell away after 2-3 days and he had the external stitches removed after a week. By 2 weeks, it was pretty well healed up. The only thing that might be tough for you with it on your head is that they may need to shave some hair and/or hair getting in the wound. You may also want to check to see if insurance will cover it's removal- often they don't because it's cosmetic, but if it is infected or painful, they will.
Good point on the insurance thing. Didn't think of that.
I did ask my doctor if she thought they'd have to shave a part of my head or anything and she said no because it's so visible (I think it's partly the cause of my thinning hair, so it's very easily accessible).
Thanks!
