December 2010 Moms

My mom is so clueless about bfing...

...it's actually a little funny.  She was a typical 80's mom: right to formula, and no one she knew even breastfed their babies. So she really doesn't have any idea about it at all.

She watched both boys while I went to that wedding on Sunday.  I left her pumped milk and then I was packing up my pump to bring it.  Here was our conversation:

Mom:"Why do you have to bring your pump?"

Me: "Because if I don't pump, my boobs will get really really full and explode."

Mom: "Yes, but just with milk."

Me:"Yes. I know. I don't think they are going to explode with dynamite."

Mom: "Well, what's the worst that can happen if they get full of milk?"

Me: "I will leak all over the place, get clogged ducts and be in terrible pain until I can nurse him again."

Mom: "Oh. Well then you better bring it."

Ha! To her credit, she totally acknowledges that she knows nothing about bfing and no longer tries to get me to give the baby formula like she did the first time around.

Re: My mom is so clueless about bfing...

  • Haha. At least she's eased up!

I guess my mom was REALLY a hippy. She was a natural birthing breast feeder and always says how she was the oddball but I never really got it since all the moms I know now are all over the spectrum. I guess in the 80s being into lamaze and BFing was pretty out of the ordinary!

  • Lol.

My mom is all about bfing but is equally clueless, what with her nipple toughening advice and her "why are you still bfing after 6 months" questions.  I just hope I don't sound as dumb and out of date when DD is having kids.

  • LOL that's a pretty funny conversation!

My mom actually BFed us the first few months (3 or 4 maybe), but she SAH, so pumps and feeding pumped milk were totally foreign to her. (I'm not sure they even had pumps back then, did they?)

I think the first time she saw me get out the pump, she was a little freaked out, even though she didn't say so. LOL

Of course they had pumps- manual ones.  My mom just found her pump from when my brother was born- he is now 32. We were cleaning out a overstuffed attic.

Haven't you seen Rosemary's Baby?  they show her with a manual pump.

Oh interesting. I've only seen that movie once. I guess I didn't remember that scene.

I guess maybe they just weren't as widespread as they are now since fewer moms were BFing and working.

  • Lol!  My mom was definitely hippy-ish and not only BF my brother and I both (me for much less though, they decided I liked juice better at 8 months!) but had so much extra that she handpumped the milk and donated the extra to the hospital.  She totally did not get why I would need a double electric since I work.  She seriously thought I only need a handpump.  We had this conversation at least 4 times before C was born.

  • Funny!

Since I was a 70's baby, my mom was part of the Lamaze, natural birth, bf'ing, making your own baby food wave.  I grew up thinking that was the only way to do things.  Lol

  • My mom was also completely clueless and tried unsucessfully to get my sister to switch to formula.  I'm sooo happy she had the first baby, even though she's four years younger than me!  She pretty much dealt with all the crazy grandparents issue and paved the way!  Once Nate came about, my mom was a little more on board, but still clueless overall.

My MIL on the other hand also had 80's babies, but breastfed them all.  She even was an extended breastfeeder! Completely unheard of when we were kids!  I love reading through my DH's and his two siblings baby books and seeing things like, weaned at 18 months!  It probably helps that she was a NICU and surgical nurse.  She was an awesome support with Nate.

  • I also wonder sometimes what baby-stuff/advice that we use now is going to be totally out of date when we have grandchildren. It'll be interesting to see what stuff our kids give us the eyerolls about...haha.

My mom breastfed me for 6 months. But it also says in my baby book that she started giving me juice at 2 months old. I just wonder at what point do you look at a hungry 2 month old and decide she need juice rather than breastmilk?!

And we were watching old home movies a few weeks ago and at my first Christmas I am 9 months old and have a cold and am coughing up a storm and my mom says it must be time for more cough syrup for me.

    I wonder that too.

In one of my newborn pic I asked mom why there was a bottle out since I was bf.  She's like "it had water in case you got thirsty." Uh, how can you tell when a nb is thirsty-thirsty as opposed to just hungry-thristy?  And then there was the entry in my baby book about how much I loved red meat at 4 months old.  I am assuming this is the why at 18 months I managed to be 10 lbs heavier than DD but half an inch shorter.

This is my mom exactly. I'm pretty sure she breastfed us until we were two. She said her mother in law tried to tell her it was inappropriate but she ignored her.
  • LOL!

My mom luckily BFed all 3 of us, so she's easy to talk to about it & understanding. My 2 sisters also BFed their kids, so it's all in the family, I guess!

My MIL on the other hand, is clueless & really uncomfortable even talking about it. With Anthony, she told me if I drink milk, it will help me make milk, for one. And with Deanna, since she's colicky & we thought she may have a milk allergy, but she doesn't, my MIL was like, "Oh, so your milk is good?" Yes, my milk is good, lol. She thought that the baby was allergic to breast milk.

  • I never realized what pioneers my mom and MIL were, but both DH and I were breastfed, and we were 70's babies.

  • My mom had a natural birth and BF both my sister and I till close to a year. She was really helpful and supportive to me. My MIL and 3 SIL all used formula so a lot of times they were wondering why I taking all the time pumping or careful of what I was eating. With DD I had to cut out all acids, gassy foods, and strong food. So that meant garlic and tomatoes to an Italian MIL who made pasta every Sunday for the family this was hard to understand. She got better about remembering to take some plain pasta out for me!!

  • Ha!

My mother bf me and my brother. With me, she did it until 6 months and then had so much milk in the freezer she just fed me from that for the next 6 months.  She didn't have a pump either, she just hand expressed into a bowl. I can't even imagine.
