1st Trimester

How often did you try and how soon did you get preg after b.c?

Okay so I've been reading past posts about how soon after stopping birth control people were able to get KU. Some say it only took two weeks, some 6 months etc. I am wondering how soon after stopping the pill you actually started trying...such as a day after or did you assume you would ovulate according to the 28 day cycle so you would try the 14 days after your period window? I mean you never know just coming off the pill when your ovulation will actually occur. I wonder if some people just had sex every other day to make sure to hit the time of ovulation if they were to ovulate that first month. So I guess I'm asking, what did you do and how long did it take?

  • I'm lurking from 2nd Tri- its a little slow over there today!

Well... I technically went off birth control in the end of March when I started Malaria Meds (mission trip to Haiti in April). We had to be VERY careful and use alternate form of BC until all the meds were out of my system (Until Mothers Day, May 13). I got my period the end of may. Then conceived on Father's day (June 17).

They do say you should wait until you have two normal cycles before trying to conceive - but my cycles were never normal and I was thinking it would take a while to get KU... I was wrong. LOL! They do say it can take normal couples up to 12 months to conceive - it doesn't happen right away for everyone.

  • With DS, I came off in May, started trying in July and got a BFP in august. With this pregnancy, I came off the pill in May, started trying in august and just for a BFP today. My doctor said only 20 get pregnant the first month trying. The first time we had sex the week fertility friend said i was fertitle/ovulating. When that did not work the first month of trying this time, i got OPK's from amazon. The cycle I got pregnant, we had sex the night I got a positive opk and the night after. We skipped a night and then had sex the next night. Good Luck!

  • I am now pregnant with my second child.  Before my first, I had been on birth control for about 12 years.  I went off the pill in early October 2010, and had a normal cycle coming off the pill.  We used protection for the month of October, because I didn't want to be pregnant on our honeymoon the following month.  I got a normal period on November 6.  We left for our honeymoon on November 13 (so obviously, there was a lot of sex that week).  I got my positive pregnancy test on December 4. So, we conceived at some point on our honeymoon.

Prior to my current pregnancy I had only been back on birth control for a few months.  I stopped using the pill in mid August, and had a normal cycle.  My husband was away on business for a large portion of the end of August and beginning of September, so we didn't have any chance to "try" to get pregnant that first month.  But I got a normal period on September 13.  We "tried" to get pregnant (had sex 5 or 6 times in the week and a half around when I should have ovulated) at the end of September.  And I just got a positive pregnancy test on October 11.

I did not do any of the ovulation tests, temping, etc; I didn't want to make it a "thing".  But, we got pregnant on the first try for both.  It's true that for some women it can take several months for their bodies to regulate after going off birth control, but that certainly isn't the rule.  I am the poster child for don't go off the pill until you are ready to get pregnant.

  • We started trying the week after i went off the pills. We got pregnant right away.
  • I have been on BC straight since 2005 when I had my daughter. I got off the week before April 1st. We got married April 7th. My doc said it might take up to 3 months to get the BS out of my system. I started on prenatal vitamins but we weren't really "trying" until June. In June I started taking OPK every day, temping and doing the deed every other day. We got preg. about the 1st of Sept. :-). I'm 9 weeks now. So pretty quick for me, I was surprised LOL.

  • I wasn't on the pill before trying this time. First baby, I got off the micro pill (progestin-only) and got pregnant within a month of trying. Can't remember how often we were having sex, but we were actively trying.

  • I went off BC at the end August and assumed I would be on the 28 cycle already, but AF came day 18. So we tried from there and got pregnant my first regular cycle off of BC.

  • With our son, I took my last pill the middle of March 2010. We didn't try real hard that first month so the hormones could get out of my system. My cycle regulated right away. We got our BFP in May, so we got pregnant the first month we were actually trying.

This time I took my last pill the end of July and we spent the first month casually avoiding again. It took us 2 cycles of trying this time to get our BFP. Neither time did I temp, chart, etc.

  • I lost my Nuvaring (it came out early somehow...still haven't figured it out).  had a period.  had sex the next days/weeks...now i'm pregnant.  and i've had one "early" period due to lost birth control ring.  so it happens fast.  lol
  • For me i havent been on the pill or anything for 3 yrs, but we did use protection. When we decided to start trying, it took 1 time and the first time and bam pregnant positive test 11 days later. Everyone is different, everyones body works its own way.
  • It took me 5 months to get pregnant the first time.  Every time since then, I have gotten pregnant the first time we tried every time (6 pregnancies since then, but 4 m/c.)

Our "surefire" method is to start having sex every other day on CD7 (or about 1 week before you know you ovulate).  Once you get a positive OPK, have sex every day through ovulation and the day after.

  • This is possibly why my positive result only showed up 9 days after my missed period, and I have my fingers crossed that everything is as it should be, but I was on and off the pill a few times over the summer b/c we couldn't make up our minds if we wanted to wait longer or not.  September was my first month off BC after being back on for 2 months before that.

  • I was on the pill for 7 years- husband and I decided we should start trying in case it took a long time to conceive. We just had regular sex- we didn't time it or anything, though I was more...ah...eager after getting off the pill and going back to my "normal" hormones. Heh. A month later I was very happily knocked up!

  • Both pregnancies I was pregnant the second month after getting off the pill. The first time around that was right after our wedding which was a BIG shock since my doctor had expressed to me it will probably take a LONG time since I had been on the pill for 13 years! HA

  • I went off birth control at the beginning of March 2011. We decided after we got married that we were going to trust God with how many kids we would have and when we would have them, so we weren't crazy about trying. After several months I was getting worried, but I figured it might have something to do with my weight. It ended up taking until August 2012 for me to get pregnant. We had sort of actively tried to get pregnant a few times (laying down after sex instead of getting right up), but this time there was one night we had sex right before bed and then just went to sleep. Later that week there was a time that I just laid in bed for about 15 minutes. I'm not sure which method worked.

You might also be interested to know that we have some friends who are about our age who had a kid, didn't go back on birth control, and didn't have another kid until over four years later.

  • We didn't try either time. DS was a honeymoon baby. With this one I'd just started charting again after nursing for almost a year. I only had 2 cycles when we decided to try but I was already pregnant. We obviously weren't avoiding either.

  • Really, if you don't have a "time frame" in mind for your pregnancy, you can start trying casually the same day you stop the pill... you never know! In my case, we knew we wanted to be due in spring so the delivery wouldn't interfere with my teaching job. So, we wanted to start trying in August. We made the decision in May of 2012, so at my OBGYN appointment that month I asked the doctor... she said, "start prenatal vitamins now to get ready, stop the pill now and 'be careful' until you're ready to try".   That gave my body a few months to regulate, but honestly... even though I was on seasonique, which the dr said could cause delayed cycle after stopping... everything went like clockwork.  Normal 28 day cycle.  We're pretty sure (based on the size of the baby and our, um, trying schedule) that it "worked" the very first time.

Of course!  You need to consider the type of BC, your age, how long you've used BC etc.  I'm 26 and have been on a pill of some type since 13 due to complicated menstrual issues, frequent cysts, and a chemical imbalance.  I was very concerned about how long it might take for my body to adjust to a "natural" cycle, so I understand!!

     Best of luck!!!

  • I stopped birth control on a Friday and starting trying that same day.  I tried maybe 200 times and got pregnant 16 months later!
  • I have been on birth control for the most part since I was 15 due to ovarian cysts.  I am now 22 and when my husband and I went on our honeymoon in Jamaica in August I forgot to pack it, so I only went that week without the pill.  Due to a little too much alcohol I didn't even notice that I had forgotten the pill until it was close to time to head home and someone asked us if we had any kids.  A few weeks after we got back I didn't start my period.  A couple days after that I took a test and I was pregnant. So I really don't think it matters how long you've been on or off birth control, it is just going to be dependent on you and your partner as to how easy it will be to get pregnant.  Good Luck!
