Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Can you give too much formula??

I breastfed exclusively for DS's first 5 months.  At 5 months, DS started getting 1 - 6 oz. bottle of formula a day (nursing 4-5x's/day).  At about 5.5 months, he was getting 2 - 6 oz. bottles of formula a day (nursing 3-4x's/day).  For the last week, I've been giving 3 - 6 oz. bottles of formula a day (nursing 2-3x's/day).  He always finished the bottle, and a lot of times acts like he could use a little more.

So today...I decided to see what he would do with 8 oz. bottles.  He nursed this morning when he woke up.  The first bottle he sucked dry...second one he left less than half an ounce...third one sucked dry.  He hasn't spit any of it up.  He will nurse one more time before bed.

He is also having solids twice a day.  Breakfast is oatmeal with 2 fruit cubes.  Dinner is 3-4 fruit/veggie cubes.

This just seems like a lot to me.  I see that a lot of you on here give your DC 8 oz. bottles, but they are older than DS.  I want to figure all of this out because in the next week or two, I would like to be done breastfeeding.

Also, do you think I should give more solids...maybe at lunch?

Thanks for any help!

  • You know babies normally have a great way of self regulation. If you are not pushing the bottle on him (making him finish) you should be okay.  That is why w/FF I don't believe in schedules b/c Harm just lets me know when he needs food.  If you are worried you can try slow drip nipples.  That helps slow thier eating down so the full receptors have time to get to babies' brain.

  • I EBF, so I can't claim to know anything about how much formula to give, but I can tell you that solids are to supplement their BM/F for the day, not replace it, esp at the 6month age. That said, you probably could add a 3rd solid meal a day soon...but really, don't let solids "replace" formula at this point.
  • Maybe he's going through a growth spurt. My pedi told me that there's no such thing as overfeeding. For the first year give them as much as they want. I think the solids that you are feeding him sounds great.

  • DD kind of did the same thing when I stopped nursing and went to formula.  I think she was going through a growth spurt or just needed more formula than breastmilk to fill her up but she is back down to a 6 oz bottle.  With her if she doesn't want to finish the bottle she won't so I always let her eat until she is done. Same with solids.
  • Sounds like he just needs that much formula.  As the pp said, if you're watching your baby's cues, it's really hard to overfeed.
