WWYD Diaper Stock pile

Hi Ladies,

So I've over budgeted in our grocery area this month since we are practicing living on a budget full of daycare and diapers.  I think I have about 100$ to spend on diapers.....what would you do

1.  Buy diapers and stockpile, not knowing what sensitivities and such the new one will have

2.  Buy a gift card and use that to buy diapers later on

3.  Something else?

 TIA!

  • Gift card so you aren't stuck with the wrong size or brand.

  • I did the opposite of most. I started buying diapers when I was pregnant. I bought when I had extra money or when I had coupons to go with good sales. I bought about 600 size 1's, a couple hundred size 2's and about 600 or so of size 3's. I did NOT buy any newborn because alot of mom's said that their LO never fit in size newborn. It turns out that my LO wore newborn for about a month, so I had to buy them last minute. I bought different brands/varietys. My LO has now used Pampers swaddlers, baby dry, huggies lil snugglers, pure and natural and luv's. My LO hasn't had any problems with any of the diapers. I have my favorites now, but they have all worked and I saved a ton of money buy buying in bulk or when on sale/deals. I wasn't too worried about buying the wrong ones because you can exchange diapers at walmart and target (without a receipt) if it turns out that brand doesn't work for you

  • 2. I've noticed that target pretty regularly swaps out what diapers they sell. They always have pampers and huggies but I have seen several varieties of those brands come and go in just 7 mos. we personally prefer up up to other brands we have tried. dd had an awful reaction to huggies. I can't imagine what we would do if we had a ton we couldn't return. That would be a huge waste of money.

  • Buy now only if you have a good deal or a coupon to mAke them cheaper. I've stocked up on size 1's and 2's only of I could get them as cheap as 17 cents a diaper with a promo and/or coupons.

If you have a BRU near you, put the money on a VIB card. They give you an extra 10%. So if you put a $100 you get $110. Plus they run promos enough that with a manufacturers coupon it's pretty reasonable. You can also use VIB money on food, formula, and wipes.

  • Definitely a gift card since you may not know what brand will work best for your baby.  However, if I were to stockpile, I would probably only stockpile sizes 3 and 4 since your baby will likely be in those for longer than in NBs or size 1 or 2. In my son's case, he "outgrew" the absorbency in certain sizes before he outgrew them in weight so we had to go up a size sooner than expected.

  • You'll have SO much baby stuff that stockpiling diapers IMO is a huge waste of space!

I get Pampers Swaddlers for .17 each through my Amazon Mom's subscribe and save

  • I wouldn't buy any in advance except for some NB size. We bought those as we ran out of them because I wasn't sure how long she would stay in them. We ended up getting a variety of diapers at the baby showers and I ended up using Pampers (this is also what was in our hospital). I tried the huggies since we had some small packages and I hated them  - leak city.

Another reason to just use a GC and not stock pile things is because the stores are going to be there. You can buy them any time. I stocked up on certain things and then didn't use them as I thought - damn receiving blankets.

  • I'd just stick a $20 bill in a piggy bank each week (or whatever you have budgeted). If you have money on a gift card, it would be easy to think of it as "free money" and buy extra stuff you don't need.

  • I'd leave the money in savings and wouldn't touch it until I needed it. I know most savings accounts are earning negligible interest, but still ... why wouldn't you want to keep your liquid assets, well, liquid?

All of the diapers I bought ahead of time were wrong. I thought I could use store brand, but they leaked. Huggies gave DD a rash. And she was tiny; we bought size 1 and she needed NB. The sales will still be there after you give birth, so no reason to stockpile. And what's the advantage of a gift card?

This. If you need to know how much in your savings you have set aside for the baby, then you can keep a spreadsheet.

  • Ditto on just putting it in savings. Why stick it on a gift card? If you have the cash, you can buy wherever they are cheapest, not where you have a gift card.

  • Either start a baby "savings account" or gift card.

Huggies and Pampers for example are typically least expensive when you buy the big boxes. They recently changed the quantities in most of the boxes (and I don't know how often they do this). For example (estimated quantities), I had a box of "106" count that I wanted to exchange and they now come in "110" count, so the store would not take the box back because they don't sell that "count" anymore.

  • Hi Everyone!

    Thanks for all the advice.

I have considered the saving option but I feel that with a .08% interest rate on 100$..it might not be worth it, given the fact that I am much more mobile and have a lot of coupons in the here and now.

As for a gift card, I'm thinking maybe getting a Visa one since it is accepted at all stores and Costco.com.  Costco isn't super close, nor is BRU.  Target is quite close thankfully.

The only upside to stockpiling actual diapers as my mom pointed out is that then we will actually have them vs having to go out and get them.  And I know I can return unopened boxes but I would hate to buy a box of Kirkland (Costco brand) that is 216 diapers and find out 20 diapers in that they make her break out and still have 200 left.  Also then if I had others, I would have to lug them and her back to the store.

Anyways, thanks for the advice and I appreciate all the time and effort you put into  your responses!

If you see any good sales or coupons,  buy now & stockpile. You can always return them or exchange size or brands later if need be.

tis, otherwise get a GC and use it when you find diapers on sale

  • The diaper coupons come out CONSTANTLY. Seriously. I wouldn't worry about that. I bought a box or so of NB (plus had a small package of NB diapers just in case we thought she wouldn't be in them very long...she was in them almost 6 weeks), size 1s, and size 2s.

You'll be glad to get out of the house to go get diapers at BRU or Target when they are having a good sale. I promise ;) We have Amazon Prime so I just get diapers through Amazon Mom on Subscribe & Save mainly.
