Adoption

Hyatt Legal Plan

I mostly lurk on this board but have posted a couple times in the past.  We are still trying for a bio child but embryo and/or TA are an option for us as well.

My question is about the Hyatt Legal Plan.  Is anyone familiar with the benefits?  Our open enrollment is the next two weeks and I'm not sure if we should continue our benefits.  We have it for 2012 and we did a will/trust/POA stuff for ourselves.  I'm not sure if this might be useful for us next year if we move into adoption if our next SA shows no sperm still.

Does anyone know what it would cover?  This is the only thing it says in our benefits book: All uncontested governmental agency and step-parent adoptions are fully covered for the participant and spouse or other qualified adult. If an adoption becomes contested, the member or spouse or other qualified adult must pay all additional legal fees.

Re: Hyatt Legal Plan

  • I don't know anything about the plan, as this is the first time I've heard of it, so I took a very a quick look at their website.  I still don't know enough to give you any advice other than to suggest that you contact someone at the company and ask, straight out, if the type of adoption you are interested in pursuing is covered.

I would specifically ask about the bolded part below:

because to me, a "governmental agency" adoption sounds like adopting from foster care.  If you are not planning to adopt from foster care and you are not considering a step-parent adoption, I am guessing this would not apply to you.

  • That's what I thought at first but I'm not sure either.  I'll have to call and get more info.

  • It was a waste of $ for us.

I would call and ask what is covered.  Many times it is only up to $1000 worth of services, which may not help you out that much depending on what it costs to participate.  GL.
