I am stumped on crib bedding...to get or not? My friends say its purely decrotive...Do you get a bumper? are they safe? or those breathable things..HELP! only 6.5 weeks to go and poor kid has no bedding.
Lol neither does mine. I'm not getting a comforter, but I'm going with a mesh bumper and a crib skirt cause it looks sorta naked without it, and lots of sheets. I don't want to have to wash the same two sheets every other day so I'm getting plenty of extras.
We got the skirt and bumper and lots of sheets.. I agree with PPs that the bed skirt makes it look complete.
As far as the bumpers are concerned it seems like peoples opinions on those are mixed. We are going to use the bumper, unless an issue arises. Some people dont use it until babys older, some not at all. The way I see it is in the start baby is to small to roll around and get stuck in it/suffocated by it, etc. There are some people that are against it all together. In the end its up to you on that part!
My BFF bought the bedding for us because she works at a baby store.
When she mailed it she got a comforter and mini pillow as well, I
figure those will be good for when we are snuggling in the recliner.

We just went to our baby essentials class offered by our hospital and taught by a nurse and she emphasized no bumpers. They also suggested we not use the breathable ones. I haven't heard much about the breathable ones but I can't see why anyone would use a regular bumper if it's recommended not to do so by the AAP. Chances are that nothing will happen but why take the chance simply because you think it looks cute. We bought several fitted sheets and a crib skirt. No bed set.
With our first we HAD to have everything........we bought the bedding for our first, but your friend is right it is purply for decoration. THey come with a crib skirt....no one sees, a nice comforter/quilt ( use it all the time ), crib sheet........no big deal, and the bumper pad which your not suppose to use we ended up hanging our bumper pad on the wall for decoration, kind of like a border. Overall for the cost not worth it at all. BUt it was our first, this time around we have hand me downs for blankets and sheets etc. We do need more as we are having twins but nothing that little fleece blankets and receiving blankets that won't do the job.
Totally up to you it was nice having it all but it really is a waste of money.
Actually the AAP suggests no bumpers what so ever. Even the breathable ones. It isn't so much of the risk of suffocation, it's more of the fact that it cuts down on the circulation around baby. Which then can cause them to asphyxiate and, well, die. I've never ever used a bumper. I had a cousin die of SIDS, not taking the risk. With both kids all I did was get a skirt, 4 sheets, and 2 waterproof pads. That is it. DD has never gotten limbs stuck in the slats of the the crib and it's just safer for everyone.
Also, many countries are actually banning the use of bumpers all together. They serve no real purpose besides being decorative and being a SIDS risk.
Nope, I am getting a crib skirt that's ivory and whatever sheets I like. No bumper. When LO is a little older I may get a breathable one so her feet, hands, and stuff stay inside the crib. My mom is making a quilt and DH's Aunt most likely will too.
I don't judge my friends who use bumpers, but my husband is very adamant we do not use them. I tend to agree. It's one thing I can definitely control, that's how I see it.
I just bought a white crib skirt and tons of pretty different sheets. Ask your baby if she cares if she has the whole kit and kaboodle, I bet she doesn't have an opinion save the $$!
I just got different colored crib sheets, I believe I have 3 different ones, and my sister made me a blaket, thats all I am doing. No on the bumpers, no need for them, they are dangerous and just for show.

Opinions of people who haven't done their research may be mixed, but the AAP (the experts) is very adament that they shouldn't be used at all, in any form.
They're mainly for aesthetic purposes, are banned in some areas of the US and in the process of being banned in others, and TBH, I'd rather my kid get an arm stuck between the crib slats than suffocate. A broken bone can be fixed, but a dead baby can't.
I don't know where you live, but the City of Chicago has banned Crib bumpers as of April 5th. It is illegal to sell them there. Whether you live there or not- I think it's only a matter of time before the ban spreads country wide. It's banned for a reason, baby's can suffocate.

Or get wrapped up in them. A friend of mine just posted a pic on FB of her 1 yo who had gotten under the strings and was all wrapped up in his bumper. She took the pic because she thought it was "cute."

It also cuts down on air flow and increases the amount of CO2 around babies. Which can increase the chances of SIDS. They were meant for a time when babies heads could get stuck in between crib slats. That isn't an issue anymore. They are pointless and a huge hazard. Hasn't Canada already banned them country wide too?
I got an expensive bed set for DS... Not worth the $. This time around I picked up a bunch of crib skirts for $2 each at goodwill and bought different color sheets.
we'll just get crib sheets for this LO. We never used bumpers etc. for our DD1. My mom makes lots of blankets for both girls, so we won't be buying any. (or putting them in the crib with LO anyway).
I agree with ppl about the SIDS risk... why go there when it's easy enough to avoid?
You definitely need fitted crib sheets. We're getting ours at Ikea for about $5 each. My mom suggested that we really only need 4 fitted sheets if we also use a crib pad underneath LO in case of leaks. That way, we just change the crib pad and not the entire sheet.

This is all LO will need. I spent a fortune on DD's bedding set and she didn't use 1/2 of it.
This time I was smart and only bought: sheets (like 6 or 7) and bed skirt.
I am going to wait on the mesh bumper to see if he even needs it. DD didn't roll and hit the sides of her crib, so it was not needed. I will go buy the bumper if he is a crazy sleeper and needs it.

All you need is a sheet! And maybe a bed skirt for the look of it.
I got the full set first time around and only ever used it for pictures. I used the bumpers for a short time when DS was mobile enough to potentially get an arm or leg stuck or hit his head - after he was rolling and scooting. In our case, DS barely even used his crib for the first 4 months, only for the occasional nap. Most of the time he was in the cosleeper, swing or my arms/carrier!
So get it if you want the cute nursery photos, but you certainly don't need it.

I am just doing sheets and a crib skirt. I will put up a breathable bumper when she is older and starts rolling around to the point her legs get caught in the crib bars.

I have the entire ensemble because it's just so cute and goes with the decor of the nursery. Realistically, the baby won't sleep in the crib with all that stuff. We have a basinet that will be closer to our bed and plan to use a swaddling blanket only. When we do place him in the crib, I plan to remove most of the extra bedding and just swaddle him. So, it's more decorative and not functional until he's much older.
We've only gotten one sheet set so far. We're only gonna really get sheets, because we don't know that we'll need much else. The baby will be swaddled, and the comforter and pillows and skirt all seem too much money to waste. However, if we decide later on to get them, we will, once baby is way older and can use blankets at all. However, PPs were correct that bumpers are banned in this city, but they are sold just outside this city. The main thing that concerns me is that they restrict air flow and can alter breathing, regardless of baby's movements or getting caught in them. I want the nursery to be as airy as possible, and if that means not having a bumper, fine. (If you like the look of bumpers, you should look at the Skip Hop complete sheets. They have cute prints on the top and also have some on the sides that have the look of a bumper without the worry. I've registered for several of them.
Re: Crib bedding - to get or not to get?
I'm doing a mesh bumper and crib sheet.
Here are some of the sheets I got. And I only have the sheets. I'm not really into everything matching.
