If you bought maternity closed second hand....

I'm thinking ahead to the day I get to get rid of my maternity clothes (this is LO#2 and we are 2 and done).

Most of my clothes I will likely just donate but I have probably about 8 pairs of Gap jeans and few pairs of nice dress pants (anywhere from 2 years old to 4 months old) that might be worth reselling.  I paid between $30 and $70 per pair (don't judge, they are the only clothing items that make me feel not blah looking)

What is my best bet for reselling them?  Craigslist? Consignment shop? Garage sale?

What would be a resonable price that someone would be willing to spend on a pair of Gap maternity jeans or dress pants that are fairly new and in great condiiton? $5? $10? $20?

Thanks for any insight!

  • I would probably try craigslist first.  I probably wouldn't pay more that $10.00 for a used pair of pants that I only plan on using for a few months.  But I'm a cheapskate!

    Agreed!

  • I bought maternity clothing second hand at a yard sale and paid between $2 and $5 per item. This included some jeans, not Gap brand, but I don't wear name brand normally so it didn't matter to me. For selling, Craiglist or check and see if there is a mom group for your area on Facebook or a swap shop in your area. Baby and maternity items seem to sell pretty well via these sites in my local area.
  • Craigslist or Ebay. I bought several Gap maternity skirts and pants from Ebay and had a great experience as a buyer. You could also it up as an auction first with the lowest price you would be willing to sell for listed as your starting price.

I paid about $12 each for the skirts and maybe $20 for the pants. It depends on the condition and style as to how much you can reasonably ask for.

  • I bought a lot of maternity clothes from consignment shops. Some of these shops can be pretty nice in that they only accept name brand, like new clothing. I paid around $15-$20 for a few pairs of nice jeans. I would look in the more upscale/artsy parts of your city to try to find a really nice consignment shop. Otherwise, I would try ebay (set a reserve price if you want to make sure you get enough or just make a "Buy it Now" auction).

  • Maternity clothes do pretty good on Ebay. I was watching quite a few pairs of jeans at one point. The good thing about Ebay is you can watch similar items for a few days and see about how much they are selling for. Most people would pay at least $10 for them.
  • I bought my maternity clothes off of craigslist.  I would have paid 10 dollars for jeans.

  • I'd definitely try Ebay.  But I wouldn't expect to get anything close to what you paid for all of them.  When I'm buying stuff second hand, I don't like spending more than $10 or so on a pair of work pants or jeans.  But if you're ok with that, definitely give Ebay a shot.
  • Ebay is a good place to sell maternity clothes if it is a good brand.

  • Thanks everyone. That really helps. I think I'll give eBay a try and shoot for a goal of around 10 a pair. Thanks again! Can't wait to not need these clothes anymore! Soon enough!
  • This is my 3rd time, I've bought used stuff each pregnancy, only bought new the first time before I knew where to go!

I've had the best luck at consignment sales and ebay actually. 2nd hand shops typically don't pay very well...for example, most jeans are going to be priced at $8-15 bucks a pair, and you'll only get a little bit of that. On ebay I sold a pair of jeans for about $5, which is what I'd expect. I don't like to spend more than 5/10 on maternity things bc let's face it, almost ALL used mat clothes are in great condition bc we don't wear them very long!

  • I paid 10 for jeans at a consignment store,  so the person selling them only got 3-4 for them. Try Craigslist.
  • I paid $10 for a great pair of dark Gap jeans from a lady on craigslist, love them. But I also paid $5 for a pair of lighter Gap jeans at Goodwill that I love.

  • I'd consider eBay. Most of my maternity clothes are secondhand (bought through eBay, consignment, or handmedowns). I do agree with pp re: not wanting to pent more than $10 on a used pair of pants.

  • Try a garage sale first, but I'd honestly say to sell them to a consignment shop. I know that moms (myself included!) appreciate being able to go in there and get used clothing that way for both baby and mama! :)
