So I'm trying to figure out what items I want to register for and I'm trying to decide whether the $60 high chair I registered for is necessary to get new.. My SIL is giving me some of their items they don't use anymore (a snap and go stroller base, a swing, their old changing table) but what other items can I buy used? Should I keep the high chair on their? Share you wisdom, wise women (and men).

Majority of LO's gear are bought used. The only brand new things we insisted on are:
carseat/seat base
crib & mattress
breast pump & plastic bottles (I am using some used glass bottles though)
new cushions for glider/ottoman
soft toys or board books that cannot be washed
Pretty much everything else we've bought/given is used, including PnP, RnP, swing, BFing pillow, clothes, cloth diapers, changing pad & cover, nursing cover, activity gym, bath tub... All of these can be cleaned, sanitized and washed with bleach, which I've done.
ETA: the high chair we have is also used - it is the IKEA Antilope which is all plastic. I wiped it with diluted bleach and then soapy water. If your high chair can be cleaned or if the fabric can be washed, I'd have no problem taking it used.

This.
I don't agree. Bottles, nipples, paci's etc can all be sterilized in boiling water for 5 minutes. It would be just as safe as buying new
Pretty much all this, down to go get the Antilop high chair. Except board books. I buy them if they look new. You can tell if they've been chewed.
