She is 6 months. We started about 3 weeks ago with rice cereal but then quickly changed to barley after hearing about arsenic in rice. Anyway, since then I've tried green beans and peaches. For both she would just not open her mouth. I didn't want to shove it in either. When I got her to smile i snuck it in. Then once in her mouth she gagged a lot. I'm assuming with both of these behaviors she just may not be ready yet? I keep trying but ending up with the same result. Ped said to try a little on my finger tip but that didn't work either. Anyone else having trouble?

1. Try oatmeal
2. Try not using a spoon. Yesterday DD started smearing some veggie dip from my plate and playing with it, trying to eat it. I want to do more of a BLW approach, but wanted a safe food for her to start with because I'm a Nervous Nelly. So I bought some of the Oatmeal and mixed 2 tbsp of it and plopped it on the table in front of her. put her on my lap and let her go at it. She had so much fun playing with it, got a surprising amount in her mouth and I had to mix 2 more lots of it before she was finished. At one point she was licking the table to get it in her mouth. She definitely ate what she wanted because when I put the 3rd bit down she stopped trying to eat it and started fussing, so I took her away at that point. Babies have a way of letting you know when they are done. I was amazed at her ability to eat it by herself. She looked super proud and she had a blast playing and learning about the texture, which is what food should be about.
Don't forget that your LO is still getting what they need from formula or BM at this point, so don't stress it too much
I read somewhere that it takes 10 x's for a baby to try a food before they decide if they like it. At 6 months... I would think you LO would be ready for solids. However it takes practice. We started with oatmeal and LO didn't want anything to do with it. From there I moved onto sweet potatoes, avocado, and squash. I am trying peas this week.
Perhaps try a different food.
Avocado, so far has been the biggest hit in this house.
