3 yr olds and saying hi to daycare, etc friends when out somewhere?

I felt so terrible today, we ran into a girl from dd's dc class and the girl came over and said hi to her and Dd just turned away and wouldn't say hi even thought I was like, dd look it is so and so fom school, say hi to her! I said hi to the girl but she just walked away and said someone to her mom who I am sure thinks dd is the rudest kid now...(tho to be honest the woman barely looked at me or dd with any recognition even tho I know her kids name and have seen the mom at dc a lot of times...).

Also we happened to see a boy from her class at ds's soccer class yesterday and he tried to get dd's attention and she would barely look at him either, again even when I said hello to him and pointed him out to her. She is pretty shy around new ppl and adults at first but I feel terrible that she is like this w other kids who make an effort to say hi... I am not sure how much empathy they can understand at this age but I told her that I was disappointed she didn't say hello back and talked a little bit about how she would feel if we saw someone and she said hi and they ignored her and how that would hurt her feelings...

Is this normal behvior at three or is she just being weirdly shy? I would hate if she is hurting other kids feelings....

Thanks... I forgot to include that there is another girl in dd's class who she always talks about and dd will say bye to her when we leave sometimes and the girl never says bye back and at first I felt sad bc I thought it would make dd feel badly but she didn't even seem to really notice...so I thought maybe this was sort of normal...but when the kid is right in her face saying hi and she turns away,..ugh :(

A couple of little girls in DS's class are very social...but then you see all the other kids and especially the little boys and they still tend to not acknowledge each other...they will learn, I'm sure.

  • My DS is the same way. In the morning he usually gets to daycare the same time as another boy, who always says, "Hi Zachary!" and Z never says hi to him. When we're at the park or something, he also never really talks to the kids there and mostly just stares/observes.
