For those of you who have started solids...

DD started oatmeal Monday and is doing great! I want to try a veggie next week but which one to choose?!? What was your LO's first?

Also, I plan on trying a new food every week, when/how do you incorporate the foods they've had while trying new ones? i.e. Do I give DD oatmeal too when I start a veggie next week? Do I still give all the foods she's tried when introducing a new one? Who knew food could be so complicated?

Re: For those of you who have started solids...

  • I started with 2 weeks of avocados... a nice super food that helps with brain functions!

Then I just started sweet potatoes for a week, then went back to avocados for a week, then a week of pumpkin, now a week of peas and carrots will be started Monday...

The first day of pumpkin was a little rough, b/c I think he thought it was sweet potato (which he LOVED) but it wasn't... but he finally got used to it...

When we started peas this past Monday he loved them too (I think he is going to eat foods like mommy does, and not daddy lol)

When you switch to a new food, switch all together... that way, if there is any allergies, you know exactly what its from... also, even if they don't accept a new food right away... try try try again (can have to try up to 10 times) before they accept the new food...

    Good Luck!!!

  • I always did cereal mixed with veggies at first. Also starting with green veggies helps since they arnt as sweet as carrots or sweet potatoes.

  • With dd I did oatmeal in the mornings, her 1st food was sweet potatoes. It was Thanksgiving easy for her to start with something we were eating at the time. I did one new food a week, but would mix new ones in with ones she was already eating. I was more adventurous since allergies don't run in our families. Plus, I kept thinking one food all week was boring! With my ds things have been a little different. I fed him earlier because he kept trying to get his sister's applesauce. I gave him a bite to see what he'd do he ended up eating half of it! I've also started alternating with carrots. I just gave him oatmeal the other morning, but he spit up so much the rest of the day that I haven't given him any more. I had planned to start sweet potatoes next, but I'm rethinking that. Might give him peas instead. Dd loved them, but hated green beans.
  • Lol ava hates greenbeans. Poor girl. She took it like a tough girl though and did the time. She ate them for the 5days. I will start to mix them with somwthing else she can eat and likes after she eats more types of food. We did the cereals. Then she had greenbeansand now im doing squash. She loves oatmel and the squash so far. Next i wil do peasthen carrots then sweetpotatos the avacado. Then pears etc.
  • We did avocado first. I know this is silly, but I wanted to make sure I choose something with a bright color. It shows up better in pictures. I know silly, but it's a healthy veggie with a bright color. It was a winner for us!
  • I am making my own so I started with avacado, super easy to make and I think DS liked it.  Then I did peas.  I am doing one veggie or fruit per week so I can catch an allergic reaction if there is one.  I have given my LO oatmeal with the veggies so far and that seems ok to him but you don't have to.

  • We just started Oatmeal also.  We have two more nights of it and then are going to be starting with squash.  I plan to give him a little cereal and also some of the squash.  I plan on mixing things he's tried with new things, etc. on occassion because we have no history of food allergy on either side of our families.  My plan for the next few introductions are squash, green beans, sweet potatoes, bananas, apples, pears.

  • We started with rice cereal with a tiny bit of bananas for taste. We quickly switched to oatmeal, though. After a week of that we added in peas. We did peas for 5 days (oatmeal in the morning and peas in the afternoon).  Next we added sweet potatoes and those in lieu of peas for 5 days.  After that we switched to apples in the oatmeal instead of bananas for 5 days.  That is all we are are doing so far and we switch it up for variety.  I think I will add green beans next week.

  • We don't really have food allergies in our families, so I just mixed it up pretty often. I didn't do any berries or anything like that, however. She started with green veggies (peas, green beans), then orange (carrots, sweet potatoes), and then yellow (squash, corn). Once we had introduced all the veggies we started fruits.  We normally do a fruit in the morning and a veggie at lunch and/or dinner. We haven't started meats yet, but I think that is on the horizon.

  • Our nutritionist recommended orange veggies first like carrots and sweet potato. Can't remember why though.

  • We started with Oatmeal at 4.5 mths. We did 2 weeks of that before introducing a veggie to go with. Avocado was our first. Our pedi recommended 4 days of each food before starting a new one. I don't do a new one every 4 days. Its been more like 1 to 1.5 weeks. We have done avocado, banana, squash, sweet potatoes and apples. DD did have a slight reaction to the sweet potatoes so we are not going to try those again until after she is 1 yr old. Our next veggie on the list is carrots. Our next fruit is peaches. So far DD loves apples and squash together.
