cradle cap?

Does anyone's LO still have cradle cap?

DD has had it for a while but since she has a good amount of hair, you don't really see it unless you are looking for it.  I thought I had read that it usually goes away on its own so since it was mostly hidden, I just let it be.

But now she's almost 1 and it's still there.  :/  It doesn't bother her, but I'd like it to go away.  Anyone else still have it?  Or did any of you use treatment to get rid of it a while ago??   Thanks!

Re: cradle cap?

  • DS doesn't have any more, thank goodness, but he had it bad for a while. I used baby oil and a fine toothed comb on his scalp probably 3-4 times before it cleared up totally.

  • DS has some left. I need to buy some baby oil, because it's starting to lurk me a bit.

  • DD still has a little patch left on the soft spot, but you can't see it. To get rid of the rest of it we did like PPs and rubbed baby oil on, let it sit for 1530min, then tried to peel it off. I ended up using my fingers, the comb took forever. It was kind of gross, but worth it in the end. We also had to wash her hair at least 5 or 6 times to get the grease out that was the biggest pain IMO. GL :

  • DS had it real bad 3 weeks ago since he's got a head full of hair. I tried baby oil and a fine comb, but it wasn't really going away. The ped's office has a baby manual for little things that pop up but aren't worth a doctor visit. It said to try a tiny bit of Head & Shoulders (making sure it doesn't get in the eyes). It cleared it up the next day. Good luck, it kinda smells gross!

  • Thanks, y'all.  I'm inclined to try the oil first but I am worried about her ending up with an oily head for days.  (LOL)  I'm just ready for this cradle cap to be gone.

  • We had it a while back and it basically went away when she started getting more hair. But I think she had a little come back/stay that I noticed the other week. I used baby phisoderm (sp?) and that helped the most. She had it for a while but that stuff worked faster than the oil was and a lot less hassle. So I still had some and used some the other day. My doc said she is old enough now you can use a pea size of head and shoulders too if it comes back, but I wanted to try to use what we already had.

  • DD1 had a real mild case until she was 1.5y.  I never did anything with it because it was so mild and you couldn't see it unless you were looking.  DD2 had it when she was younger and I used the baby oil.  I let it sit for 20 minutes, brushed and then bathed her.  It was gone in 3 treatments.

  • My LO had it for a long time as well.  Tried the baby oil, the olive oil tricks and while it helped, it always returned.

I had a pediatrician friend suggest dandruff shampoo (Selsun Blue).  I was worried about it being too strong.  But we used it during 4 baths (we do baths every other day) and voila - the cradle cap went away and stayed away.

    Good luck!

  • my son had it really bad until he was about four months old.

I tried various oils, but it kept coming back. you have to "kill" the root of it. My pedi suggested Head and Shoulders (the one in the dark blue bottle, I think it's clinical strength?). We used a small amount every three days or so, then once a week and it was gone I think in a week.

It was so dramatic of an improvement I wish someone had told me sooner! It never came back.
