Bassinet, Rock n Play or both?

Recently, my MIL was asking me about specific items that we were looking to add to our registry.  Among what DH and I are wanting to put on the registry is a Rock n Play sleeper.  When I mentioned this to my MIL, she asked if we were considering also getting a bassinet or if we would like a bassinet instead of the Rock n Play.  Neither myself nor DH had considered one before and in looking at quite a few of them, most seem a bit bulky to me and not as easily portable as the Rock n Play.  I'm wondering if from any of your experience, is there a benefit to having a bassinet instead of or in addition to a Rock n Play and also a crib?

  • FTM here but we are using the RNP as the bassinet. We will use it in our room at night for baby and then let her nap in her crib and PNP during the day.

  • We kept our rock n play in the living room and used it to put the baby in when he wasn't being held, or sometimes he napped in it.  I don't recommend them sleeping in it at night because they can become accustomed to sleeping on an incline, making it harder to transition to a flat crib mattress.  So unless your LO has reflux issues requring them to sleep on an incline i would try to have them sleep flat.

That being said, I think a pack n play with the raised basinet feature is more usefull than a basinet.  A basinet will only be used for a few months while a pack n play can be used for travel/grandparents house later.

    Just my two cents.  :)

Oooh, I hadn't really thought about a pack n play.  Looking at those online that seems a LOT more versatile than a traditional bassinet.  Thanks a ton!

  • Rock n play! We had both a bassinet and a rnp and the rnp is sooo much better. Everyone makes such a big deal about transitioning to sleeping flat but you can easily put a blanket under one side of the mattress to transition and then pull it out when they are use to the crib.

The rnp is so awesome. You an easily move it around wherever you are and you can even fold it and throw it in the car if you are going somewhere during nap time.

  • We have both. MIL had given us a bassinet for LO. The first two weeks were rough. He only slept for about an hour in the bassinet. I heard about the RNP and we went out and got one. He sleeps great in that at night.

  • We have a PNP and a RNP. We did not intend to get a RNP, but one was given to us, so we decided to keep it. We plan on the PNP as our bassinet option for the first few months. The RNP will be used for short naps in the living room (but most naps will be in his crib if I'm awake or in the PNP if I'm napping too) and will only be used at night if we have reflux issues.

As PP said, I've heard to many stories about difficult crib transitions after use of the RNP exclusively, so we prefer to limit use of it.

  • We had a bassinet and PnP. She hated laying flat so I would get the RnP and skip the bassinet if I were you.

  • My lo used a RnP and a bassinet. She had jaundice as a newborn, so the RnP was perfect for her using a biliblanket! Hopefully that won't be an issue for you, but it was a big help for us. What I did was lo slept in the RnP during the day when we could have an eye on her, and she used the bassinet at night. However, I also coslept, so she rarely used the bassinet.

I will say that I have heard a great deal of complaints about the transition from angled to flat, and (I could be wrong), but I'm pretty sure the instruction manual advises against using it as a bassinet (which is why we didn't). Flat-head could be a problem, but don't cite me on it. It's great to have though! We called it the "baby perch"- it was just an easy, portable place for her to hang out at and catnap. We did naps in it, just not nighttime sleeping.

I second this. If you have to choose only 1, go Rock n Play!
