Just found out TWINS

THis pregnancy has already been stressful and just less than ideal. When I finally accepted it and became excited, I go in to the doctor and I find out at 10 weeks that I am having TWINS! The twins I was told are sharing 1 placenta and the dr THINKS they each have their own seperate sac. Does that mean they are fraternal, identical? I am very nervous about a twin pregnancy. I really want to have a natural childbirth. I also have 3 other children. I am so new to this with twins!

Re: Just found out TWINS

  • Congratulations!! It's definitely a shock, and there are day's that I'm okay with it, and still days that I'm like 'OMG...twinssss wth do I do!'

It sounds like they are mono/di twins - twins that share a placenta and have seperate sacs (my twins are mono/di as well) 99% of the time they are identical. (someone correct me if I am wrong). It just requires a little bit closer monitoring to make sure both babies are getting the correct nutrition. I would definitely talk with your OB about going natural if that is your wish - most will not, but there are a few who will allow you to go natural. It will also depend on the hospital you are delivering at and their policies.

  • Yep :) One placenta = identical in nearly every case. There are very, very rare cases of fused placentas appearing to be one where the twins end up being fraternal, but it is probably safe to assume that you've got ID twins.

  • Sounds like mo/di, which is identical.

  • Congrats!  Yes, if they are sharing one placenta they will be identical.  If they have a dividing membrane they are in different sacs and will be considered mono/di.  I have my 10 week u/s pic in  my profile if you want to compare Big Smile
