Would you bring LO with you to the OB?

I will have an OB appointment coming up soon to get my Mirena removed. We just moved to a new province where I know no one so I don't readily have someone available to babysit LO (who will be 2 next month), and it is not possible for DH to take time off of work. (I am a SAHM)

My option first is to take LO with me to the appointment. He will usually sit well and be fairly patient if I have him in the stroller, and give him a snack/toys etc. as long as the appointment is not running behind or whatever.

My other option is to put an ad online to look for a babysitter who will come into my home for a short time while I go to the appointment. I'm a little hesitant to do this because I've never had anyone other than family babysit LO. I'm just worried that he will have a meltdown and I will have to leave my appointment before it is over and that it will be a huge waste of time. It's just easier to take him with me, KWIM?

I would rather go for option #1, but I'm wondering if it is weird to take your kid with you to an OB appointment. Have you guys ever taken your LO to an OB appointment?

Re: Would you bring LO with you to the OB?

  • When I was going through my last round of trying to get get pregnant, I had multiple miscarriages which meant multiple appointments for blood draws and what not. I stay at home, so there was no way that I could find a sitter every time for DD. She went with me quite a few times to the OB. It went fine. Of course, any time I knew I was going to be in the stirrups, I made sure to have alternate arrangements. The last appt she had to go to with me ended up being a long wait, but I had brought the DVD player in with us, and that, snacks, and the iphone kept her entertained the whole time. I think it's fine... My OB office even has a little play area in the waiting room.

  • Personally I would try to find a babysitter.  Chances are you will want a babysitter for other things at some point in the future, so you might as well look for one now.  I had great success finding a sitter on care.com.

  • I've taken DS to the OB. It's not that big of a deal. Just make sure you have entertainment and snacks. The nurses are used to having kids around. They are always willing to help. I would take my Ipad & snacks. No need in paying someone. But that's just me.
  • i took both kids with me to my pp appt.

    Agree completely with this.

  • I would take him with. I took DD to my PAP appointment last year (she was 15 months) and she was not happy in the stroller. She sat with me on the table and was not too content but my OB was fine with it. It was not a long appointment. I am sure OBs are used to having little ones there.

IUD removal is very quick so the appointment itself should be very quick. If your LO is happy in the stroller I would not hesitate. In fact I will have my next annual coming up and have to take DD with me. She will likely sit on the table again with me.

  • I can't remember a single appointment DS has stayed home for. The IUD removal is super quick, bring snacks and something to entertain him. My OBGYN's office has us in and out in 30 minutes though, so that probably makes a difference.

  • DD came with me to all my OB appts when we were going thru fertility treatment.  She was in the room when DS was "conceived" thru IUI :-)  I would have no choice but to bring my LOs and I have :-)  I just keep them up by my head;  they are very good when we're out and about.

  • When I was pg with DS I took DD with me to every appointment.  DH went with my to my fist PP check and kept the kids in the waiting room, but after that I had a couple of additional ob appts r/t thrush and took both kids with me.  It was fine.  I just took snacks and toys to keep her busy.

  • I take my children to all my medical appointments. I had a smear with them both in the room, and had hemmorhoids examined.

I figure personal privacy can come later, and until then I'm just very matter of fact about the Dr needing to look at Mum's bottom to make sure it's healthy.

DD1 has always been exceptional at sitting and waiting in puclic, and DD2 is still tiny and happy with any chew toy I give her.

  • I'm a nurse in a large OB/GYN office and ladies bring their kids in with them all the time! Like all day every day!  We even have a very large play area in the waiting room with toys for all ages. If there is any Drs office that is kid friendly its your OB.I would definately not leave my LO with someone I ran an ad to find just to go to an OB app. especially if LO will be OK in the stroller with toys and snacks. And if they start to get a little fussy just ask a nurse or one of the staff to play with them, I'm sure they won't mind. I actually held a baby yesterday for like 20 min for a ladies 6week post pardem appointment and was happy to do it. In fact, 3 of us were fighting to do it! So dont feel uncomfortable, just take them! And maybe just check to make sure the Dr is running on time to cut down on wait time or schedule the first app. in the morning or after lunch
