Does Mirena hurt?

I am strongly considering getting Mirena since I am paranoid about having baby #3 right now. I am on the pill, but feel like it isn't working, so want something more.

Was it painful to get Mirena implanted?

Re: Does Mirena hurt?

  • For me, it was slightly painful. It surprised me but it only lasted like ten minutes at most and has been worth it.

  • For me it wasn't as bad as a pap smear. They had to use the "extra long" tail one to insert because they said I had a very long torso and wanted to make sure it was placed right. The nurse told me because of that most likely is why I spotted and was sore after.
  • I did not hurt during placement.  I had some cramping and heavy bleeding for 24 hours and then was fine after that.

For like 5 min during insertion with some slight cramping.  I had a c section and was told that it may be less painful for people who have had a vaginal birth.  I just had mine removed and removal was very easy.

  • I don't remember it being that bad. A little uncomfortable. But not having to remember to take a pill everyday makes it so worth it.

  • It didn't hurt, it was uncomfortable for a little bit. I personally hated mine though and had it taken out after a year. My friend has ParaGuard and absolutely loves it.

  • I had mine put in about 12 weeks after a failed vaginal/emergency c-section (so I did dilate some).  The doc said it went in very easily because I was still somewhat dilated at that point.  Going in it felt like a pap with a little bit of cramping.  Coming out she did it after a pap and I didn't even realize it was out.

I LOVED it when I had it- nothing to remember every day, way fewer side effects than I had with ortho tricyclen low, and I almost never got a period- light spotting every 2-3 months.

When we're done TTC, I'm definitely getting another!

  • For me it was slightly painful. I had some strong cramps for about 10 min afterwards. I got pregnant with our son while I was on the pill, so after being on the mini pill for the first 6 months after having our son I decided to switch to the mirena. My doc recommends to take tylenol before your appointment to help with the cramp like pain.

  • I was expecting it to be painful. But I went in and I thought she was just getting prepared when she said "Okay, all done!". Didn't hurt a bit, and I'm one who often felt uncomfortable during my cervical checks in pregnancy.
