Alright ladies (and gents), I posted here on Saturday about my LO. He had blood in his bowel movements and was having diarrhea episodes. Took him to his pediatrician this morning and it looks like he has a dairy protein intolerance. My doctor recommended that I cut ALL dairy out of my diet to continue BFing, and he has a follow up appointment two weeks from now for her to see how he's doing with the dairy elimination diet.
I do not know how I am going to do this, probably every meal I eat has some sort of dairy in it. For those of you ladies who have been put on a dairy elimination diet, what do you eat???
Re: Dairy Protein Intolerance
There are more options than you think! When my LO was diagnosed in mid-Aug I was so overwhelmed and I thought I could not do the elimination diet and BF. But I am! One of the other MSPI ladies sent me this link with a list of dairy free foods. There is also an MSPI weekly check in that is posted on the BF/Food allergy board. I think the check in is today, so check it out. You can do it!!

Oy. I wish I was only giving up dairy and not also soy. And I'm sure those on the major elimination diet wish they were only giving up dairy and soy! I eat lots of plain veggies, fruit, pasta, dry cereal -- I'm addicted to Wheat Chex. Sure hope my son does not have a gluten allergy. We have processed meat (cold cuts) that looks like it should be safe, but I've gotten really paranoid so I won't eat it. I eat bacon, though. Eggs. We make potato salad every weekend and I eat it for several days. BEANS. I made 2 big pots of beans this weekend and froze some. I also made minestrone from scratch. I hate, hate cooking but it was the only way. We like those casseroles using cream-of-whatever soup. No more. I left out the soup and instead added a little bit of "Imagine" brand chicken broth (from Whole Foods) and it was fine, just not thick and soupy like. Perfectly edible. Check out the nutrition info for all your favorite fast food places, if any. If you're only avoiding milk it won't be too bad. Ask for no cheese or pick it out and watch out for things that might be buttered.
Bread isn't too bad if you're just avoiding dairy. White bread may not work but you can find wheat and french bread without dairy.
Good luck. I was off dairy for almost 2 weeks and my son still had microscopic blood. So then I gave up soy, too and went to a gastroenterologist who told me it could take a few weeks and don't bother checking again until another month has gone by. I really don't understand because my son is not even colicky or anything.
I did this with my first child. Try this blog. I wish I'd found this 2 years ago!

I'm there. K reacts to soy lecithin and soybean oil in addition to milk and soy proteins , so I'm obsessively checking labels and we cook from scratch most often. Tortilla chips are my mainstay snack, but I have to be careful of brands because they fry in soybean oil sometimes. Grandma's oatmeal raisin and peanut butter cookies are both milk and soy free if you are stopped at a convenience store and craving a snack. McDonald's fries have dairy in them, so you have to check things. Wendy's is my favorite fast food place because I can have their fries, their jr hamburger, and the chili, plus a few other things. Most fast food places have allergen info online.
I use Earth Balance No Soy as a butter replacement, but use coconut oil and canola oil for baking. I have lard bought to make biscuits. Hemp milk is around the same fat percentage as whole milk, so I use that for whole milk subs and rice milk for things I'd use reduced fat milk in.
Duncan Hines cakes and brownies are nearly all milk free, but they use soybean oil. The MSPImama blog is great and I wish I'd found it sooner. We started this elimination stuff at 6 weeks old.
It gets better with time and it isn't forever, thankfully.
