Thoughts? Peridot- Middle Name

Hi Baby Namers,

Getting ready to start trying to conceive number 2 and have been (of course) brain storming baby names.

What are everyone's thoughts on Peridot pronounced (PEHR-ee-doh) as a fun middle name?  It is the oddly perfect combination of my three grandmother's names (Pearl, Dorothy (Dot) and Emerald (gem stone)) and I think it has a pretty sound.  Any first names would be more conventional and user-friendly.

Love it?  Hate it?  Indifferent?

Thanks for your opinions!

Re: Thoughts? Peridot- Middle Name

  • I really like it.  I love color names but they don't tend to go over well on this board.

I also like the significance and I think it's cute.

Do you have any idea of what the FN would be?

I will say that I do love "gem" names in general (dd's mn is Pearl, and I would love to do another gem mn for a future child).  It's awesome that you also have the family significance connection as well.

  • Dislike, mostly because I prefer names that everyone will know how to pronounce when they see it.

Thanks for your opinions, everyone!  We still have time to work out the kinks (at least nine months!) and come up with potential first names.  I can see how it looks like "Period" if you are glancing fast, eeks!

For a first name I wouldn't use it, but for a middle name, paired with a classic or more common first name I think its great and its fun. I also think that the middle name spot is kind of for using family names and you have incorporated family with this name, so I like it.

    This!

  • I kind of love it! I like gem names in general (DD#1's 1st MN is Jade and DD#2's 2nd MN will be Pearl) and this one is refreshing.

  • I hate it. I know how to pronounce it and know it is the August birthstone, which makes me hate it more. Unless the gemstone is an established name (like Pearl or Ruby), taking a non-name gemstone and using it as a name sounds trashy to me, i.e. Diamond, Sapphire, Amethyst. I think you can honor your grandmothers in a better way.

  • I know what a Peridot is and my birthday is not in August.  I think the sentiment behind it is great and as a mn no worries on it being pronounced incorrectly at school or mixed up with the word period.

My grandmothers name are Mary Prudence and Patricia Broussard... so I may just be used to unusual mn.

  • I like it because it has significance to you and your family.
