Coughing/Choking Advice Please

The birth month board for our 3 month old stinks so maybe someone can help us here.

LO keeps coughing at night and it sounds like he is choking. I jump up and burp him sometimes he spits up like crazy and other times nothing. We have him elevated, Dr does not seem concerned. The Dr. said if it does not get better to add cereal to his bottle. Huh? He does spit up during the day but he does not cough and gag like he does @ night.

I suspect that it is related to a cold we all have been fighting from our other foster son. Could it just be from that? I know I have the cold going around and I am coughing junk up. I am trying to hold off on the cereal if possible.

Thoughts/Suggestions?

Re: Coughing/Choking Advice Please

  • Might just be drainage from the congestion causing him to gag and spit up. My DD coughed and then spit up during her last cold. Nice steamy shower and suctioning his nose before going down for bed might help with that.

Or it might be reflux. Have you ever discussed reflux with the Dr.? My DD had silent reflux. She spit up only a little bit, but when she was a nb she struggled with feedings (arched her back and screamed) and had stomach acid smell on her breath. And many nights she made a chocking noise and then I would pick her up and milk would be coming out of her nose which freaked this FTM out!. After she was put on Zantac feedings become much easier and by I think 5 months she was off of it.

  • One of our little ones also did this when he first came to us.  I too was worried about it, and the doctor wasn't too concerned in our case either.  One thing that helped me was having my DH (who is a nurse) or a medical person listen to his lungs.  They could tell that he sounded terrible, but that it wasn't getting into his lungs.  His congestion and coughing was in his sinuses.  Also, the nurse practioner explained with another baby we had that they sound a lot worse, and tend to cough/sound like they're going to choke because they don't yet know how to clear their throats like we do.  But that they still do through coughing, it just sounds worse before they actually cough.   I don't know if this comforts you at all though.

I would, however, stay away from putting cereal in baby's bottle.  Everyone I've talked to at WIC said this is old advice that is not recommended or should be recommended anymore.   They have special formulas out there (I think Enfamil AR) specifically designed for spitty babies if you think that might help.

  • It is so scary!! I will try the steamy bathroom. We have a cool humidifier and a warm air one. My momma gut says it is from the cold and not just spit up. It does not help when you hear him and swear he is choking to death. Ugh, I wish I could fix it faster. *sigh*

Thanks for the advice ladies :)

  • Our doctor is very natural, she usually recommends putting a pillow under the mattress to elevate the head (sounds like you are already doing this) and taking 3 steamy showers with him a day.  I put on my bathing suit and take him in, if the baby gets scared of the shower just being in the room would probably help.

Also, she has us give him saline drops for his nose instead of suctioning, for some reason she doesn't like suction, but I will say all of my friends' doctors have them use suction so I'm sure that's good too.

I have actually heard the cereal for refluxy babies, but as a PP said there are formulas with cereal in them, or reflux formulas.  I wouldn't put actual baby cereal in the bottle.

Good luck, it's so hard with a sick baby you just want them to tell you what's wrong so you can help them!
