Any Asthma moms?

My son is almost 3.  After a second visit to the hospital in 5 months, we were told he has asthma and he needs to be on pulmacort every day 2x a day.  I would be okay with that except I know from the last bout that the drug makes him evil....mean, sad, impulsive, aggressive.  Everything he is usually not.  The last time we used it was just so sad.  I feel like the doctors are ignoring me when I tell them how he reacts.  Does anyone else have experience with pulmacort or maybe an alternative?  Thanks so much....I don't want to choose between a healthy child and a happy one.  Ugh.

Re: Any Asthma moms?

  • My son Will got that way on albuterol so our pedi switched him to xopenex. That's his rescue inhaler though; he was on Qvar for his preventive daily inhaler and it didn't seem to have negative side effects. I'd definitely see a different dr. It gets a little confusing w/Will because he's seen our pedi, his allergist and now a pulmonologist all for his breathing issues so we have all 3 adjusting his meds depending on who he's seeing at the time.

  • My son has never had any problem with his asthma medications, except for prednisone!  That stuff is awful!  I know from having been on it myself for over a year it has a lot of nasty side effects.  The last time he was hospitalized he was getting iv steroids and for the first few days he was a model patient.  By day four of steroids he was so different.  I asked the doctor when I could have my sweet boy back!

I would definitely ask for another medication to try. There are many medications out there to try, its not like its the only option.  And if another medication does the trick for asthma but without the negative side effects in a win win!

  • My twins have asthma and thankfully haven't had an side effects. Do you see a asthma dr? If not, maybe check one out. I wouldn't want to keep kid on a med that made them "evil" either! I hope you get some answers soon.
