2nd child question?

Do second children seem to get sick more easily than the first?

DS2 is already on his third cold.  I don't know if this is something I should bring up with the pedi or not.

  • My 2nd and 3rd got sick sooner than my first did. I think it has something to do with older bring home germs more than anything.

  • Nope. I would mention it to the pedi. Dd1 was at the hospital a lot in her first year and picked up nothing (ds was inpatient for months). I was surprised her first cold didn't happen until 18m, that was the first time she'd ever been sick. The girls don't get sick much at all beyond the odd runny nose. Between colds and GI bigs, maybe at best, sick 2/3 times a year?

Obviously we aren't to that point yet, but I can see this happening.  The older child will bring home germs from school that the LO hasn't developed a resistance to yet.  With the first LO, you can shelter him/her from germs a bit longer.  Our first year dating, I made DH soooo sick...his non-teacher immune system could not handle the germs that I brought home.

DS1 doesn't go anywhere to bring the germs home.

  • Not sure. My 2nd is the SN one and has allergies to boot so I'm not sure if his getting sick would have anything to do with that stuff or not. Overall though, it doesn't seem that DS2 gets sick more often or more frequently than DS1. I mean, I suppose he MIGHT, but with his environmental allergies I think it could make him seem like he gets sick more.
  • I loved the school policy at the school my oldest attended 5th grade.  In addition to having to bring in the boxes of tissues, the students also had to bring in the tubs of disinfecting wipes and the last few minutes of school every day, in all the classes, the students each grabbed a wipe and wiped down their desk and chair, (and yes, the teacher wiped down his/her desk at the same time) the students took turns wiping down door knobs, and other surfaces in the classroom. It did noticiably cut down on the number of times my kids were sick during the school year.

  • I think DD2 has been exposed to more germs at a younger age, just b/c she almost always gets whatever DD1 brings home. With DD1, her activities were determined by me, but DD2 is somewhat at the mercy of DD1's schedule -- and man, preschool is a germ factory.

My girls also are noticeably prone to get sick in different ways. As a baby/toddler, every cold DD1 got turned into an ear infection, but she never got croup. DD2 has never had an EI, but has had croup twice and gets a croupy couch with almost every cold.

I'd probably bring it up with the pedi so that they're aware. That's a lot of colds for as young as he is.

  • my 2nd son was sick all.the.time starting from the get-go.  i figure it's from the older one bringing home the germs from school.

  • DD gets sick alot more, but she's out a lot more with DS (SNs) playgroup, preschool, therapies, etc. If your DS2 isn't, I'd look at whether your DH or therapists are bringing more germs into the house somehow (handwashing for all, changing his shirt immediately when coming home for your DH) or your seeing more relatives/etc with your move (again, more handwashing on entry) and if not, I'd call the pedi.

I think this may be a big contributing factor for my family. DS2 does seem to get sicker than DS1 used to at the same age. He gets higher fevers and it seems to take him longer to get over bugs. I haven't asked the pedi about it and figured that it is just because they are different kids and their bodies handle illness differently.
