Tell me about Thomas the Tank Engine Toys

Hi there - popping in with a question if you don't mind. My ILs are thinking of getting DS a train table with Thomas wooden track and engines for Christmas. He'll be 2 in January. Is that age appropriate? I see the recommended age is 3-5. Would you say we should wait one more year? I'm also concerned about any choking issues with the wheels. But also wondering if he'd be more interested when he's a year older. Thanks!

DD really enjoys her Thomas set. It seems like most toys start at 3, probably just the company covering their backs. I would go for it!

Get it! It's the best toy. My oldest started with those at 18 months old.

DD is 2 and has recently fallen in love with Thomas. My parents still have a huge set from my younger brother so she plays with them at their house. I definitely think you should get them.

We bought DS the Imaginarium set from TRU at about 16 months, and we probably could have given it to him at closer to a year. He loves it and there were very few parts that were choking hazards (we just put those away for later)- the buildings, trains, and tracks all seemed very safe to us.

FWIW, the Imaginarium set is much less expensive than Thomas and is compatible with wooden Thomas items and the Target Circo brand ones as well.

I think since it's such a big purchase, it's better to get it earlier and get more use out of it. I think DS would have loved it when he was cruising and learning to pull up on things, because he could have pulled himself up on the table and pushed the trains around.

DS didn't get into it til around 2.5. He loves it now

DS got the Thomas stuff for his 2nd birthday/Christmas and he is OBSESSED. He'll play with it for hours if we let him. I think 2 is definitely age-appropriate, unless your LO has a habit of swallowing things. DS is pretty hard on everything and the wheels have never come off.

This. We have EVERYTHING THOMAS. Books, DVD's, puzzles, flash cards, over 100 different trains (yes over 100). My husband became addicted to buying them on Craigslist. Definitely keep an eye out on Craigslist for Thomas stuff, it gets expensive. But Thomas is a great character for a child to adore. No bad guys, no weapons, no fighting.

best $ we have spent since the little man came along we had ours at 18 mod and it is the only toy that will hold his interest for any period of time. he will play at it for hours. we get the wooden trains (there is a wood set and metal) and they are made really well. Hour lo is pretty hard on toys and he is yet to get a wheel or any other piece off.
