VBAC

Anterior Placenta and VBAC?

Anyone else planning a VBAC with an anterior placenta? I have one, and my docs say it is not associated with increased risk. But Ina May's book mentions that she won't VBAC someone with placenta over the incision site, and I guess I envision that most anterior placenta's would likely be close to the incision site.

 Any thoughts?

Re: Anterior Placenta and VBAC?

  • I had an anterior placenta with my first VBAC and I have one this time as well. But they were a safe distance from the incision site. I would just ask about how close it is at your next ultrasound.

  • I had one. No complications.

  • I read the same thing in the book and was concerned. My doctor did not seem to be very concerned about it.

  • You are referring to placenta accreta. It CAN happen with an anterior placenta but is a rare complication. That is when the placenta attaches to the incision site.

I had an AP and had a VBAC last month. No issues whatsoever with the AP.

  • Thanks for the answers, everyone! Sounds like I just need to ask my doc how they ensure that the placenta is not over the incision site. I haven't had an ultrasound since 24 weeks, so I'll be curious to hear what she says.

    Thank you!!

  • to my understanding the anterior placenta moves up (much like a marginal placenta previa does) as your uterus grows.  They can check by ultrasound to see where it is exactly when you get closer to your due date.  I have an AP and my OB will do an u/s closer to the due date to check on that as well as my old incision area before i attempt the vbac

  • I had an anterior placenta with my VBAC and it wasn't a problem. Usually the placenta moves upwards as your uterus grows. They did do an u/s after I went into labor to make sure the bleeding I was having wasn't caused by the placenta being on the incision site.

  • I VBACed with an anterior placenta without a problem (pitocin induced as well). No idea yet where my placenta is this time, but it took a long time to start feeling movement so I suspect it may be anterior again.

  • I had an anterior placenta and my OB was never concerned. No complications during the VBAC.
