How many tantrums does your 2.5 year old have a day/week?

Temper Tantrums have gotten out of control lately.  I know she is adjusting to having a sibling and everything...but it just seems like they are happening more and more. I have tried everything, redirecting, ignoring, time out, giving her extra attention...EVERYTHING.

I would say she has about 2-3 full on 10+ minute temper tantrums A DAY..sometimes more, sometimes less.  Is this normal?

When she isn't getting mad about something silly (like wanting to eat 3 icepops at a time) she is a very happy silly girl. I'm just at a loss with what to do.

  • I'd say maybe 3-4 a week.  I wouldn't say she's spoiled, although I may be wrong.  I don't buy her everything she points out and when we're at a store and she points something out I say yes that's nice, I don't always assume she wants it and alot of times she doesn't.  I also pick my battles.  DH got upset and refused to take her to the park because she was wearing a coat and hat that was way too small, she looked ridiculous and refused to take them off.  I talked to him about it later and said I would have just let it go.  Yes she looked silly, but who cares.

  • Right now, rarely.  I feel like every 4 months or so, DD will go through a phase where she has several tantrums a day.  Then, she kind of gets over it, and we're fine for a while.  Then, we'll have another rough month.  Right now, she's in a good mood period.  She does have instances of whining daily, but she snaps out of it in a minute or so.  I mostly ignore the behavior, or I'll tell her I'll listen to her when she's ready to ask me nicely.
  • For us it feels like all the time.  I would say maybe 1-2 big ones a day and other smaller tantrums.  It's very frustrating and we don't even have another little one, so i feel your pain!  I say just keep being consistent.  Our little girl is also very happy and fun loving, but very strong willed.

  • Hardly any.   6 months or a year ago I would have answered differently.  He had them all the time over the smallest things. But I did a lot of ignoring, not giving in,  and working with him, so now they have decreased by quite a bit.  LO knows the rules and the boundries and doesn't really push them, becasue he also knows the consequence if he does.

Now he really only throws a tantrum if he is very very tired or hungry.  He stills cries when he doesn't want to do something, but it usually only lasts a couple minutes and he is pretty redirecatable.

  • We went through the same thing right before the new baby was born.  All I can say is thank goodness it was a short phase.  She would freak about everything and anything for about 4-5 months.  It got so bad, I thought about seeking out a child therapist or something.  I found ignoring her was the best way we could manage.  At around 2 years 8 months, something just clicked.  We're finally to a point where she only has a couple of tantrums a week and they're not nearly as bad.  Hopefully, you'll be through it soon.

  • Honestly none usually. He started having 1-2 big ones a week and we curbed it fast. I was expecting them to start up again after bringing DD home but there hasn't been any jealousy

  • DD is 2 years and 8 months and most days we have about 1-3 small tantrums a day. She also has a new baby in the house so I won't be too hard on her.
  • Very rarely. Maybe 1-2 every few months. I'm talking about tantrums though.

He may get upset and "pout" or have to sit in time out but not tantrums.

  • 1 or 2 a week?  They're not very long.  But we do a lot of pre-emptive work to avoid them, and would have more without having found strategies that work for her (and us).  The biggest strategies for us (outside of choosing battles wisely, of course) is giving time warnings for just about any transition ("we're going to leave/take a bath/have dinner/put up the book/whatever in 10 minutes" and repeating at 5, 2, and 1 minutes) and to give her choices (let her pick which long sleeve shirt she wears, for instance).  You probably do these already, of course.

  • They don't stop, they grow out of them. When she does it put her in her room and close the door. You don't have to hear or see it.

your not alone I am in the same boat as you.   Still trying to figure out what works best.

  • for those who say you ignore them and the tantrums subside, what do you do when the tantrums are about eating dinner, putting on a diaper, pajamas, etc. i.e. things that you need them to do.
