1 month old ?

I have a one month old and he is only sleeping 45min to 1.5 hr stretches at a time. He always wants on my boob. Not in a growth spurt way, it has been like this for weeks. I'm exhausted and I don't feel like he could really be this hungry. I EBF and bedshare. Any advice? My mom says I should only feed him 3.5 to 4 hours but he screams if I don't offer him the boob.

  • I'm sorry but it is so very irritating when people think babies eat at set times. Welp atleast not breastfed babies. Breastmilk is the best and purest thing which I know you know and it goes straight through the belly of the babies so they poop often and eat often. Alot of woman who formula feed will see that avg feeding be between 2-4hrs but breastmilk breaks down easily. Its a good thing and at only a month old the baby is trying to build your supply. So I wouldnt be too set on this being your schedule forever just until he/she can build your supply to stay fuller longer and itll subside until growth spurts of course. GL :) try not to get too overwhelmed

  • He's still very little and is helping your supply build/ adjust to his needs. From the start of a feeding to the start of the next feeding, at his age there really should only be 3 hours or less! Frequent feedings provide comfort and nutrition your LO needs. Don't listen to your mom and don't worry about a schedule. He'll set his own.

LO knows what he needs and will set his own feeding schedule. Try your best to be patient and know that he will become a much more efficient nurser as he gets older. It may take him an hour to fill his tiny belly right now, putting him ready to eat again less than 2 hours later. In a couple months, he'll nurse and be done in 10 minutes!

I found that nursing while laying on the bed with him in the crook of my arm was comfortable, snugly, and kept my arms from getting tired. He would nap and nurse, and I read a book, watched tv, or napped with him (the luxury of LO #1). Relax and enjoy the snuggles. They grow so fast! :)

My son is 11 weeks and eats every 2 hours...every baby is different. Especially as young as your son, they know what they need.
  • Thanks ladies. This is just what I needed to hear :]

  • My baby ate ALL the time until about 6-8 weeks.  Seriously we did not leave the house except for doctor's appointments during that time because he would cry to eat as soon as we would leave the house.  It was totally overwhelming and I thought I would never get off the couch.  Now he is 4 months and eats every 1.5-3 hours and only for about 5-10 minutes at a time.  I find myself wishing he would take more time so I could relax more while feeding him :)
  • People were always on my case about me feeding DD too often as well. They didn't understand why I didn't just give her a paci.   I fed her when she was hungry.  I eat when I am hungry, why shouldn't she?  Sometimes I want a meal, sometimes I want a snack and sometimes I just want to pick at something just 'cause.  It helped to explain that a baby's stomach at this point is just the size of a large marble or golf ball...and that breastmilk is digested quickly.  I feed her on demand.  Now her feedings are adjusting so it's not as tiresome on me.

  • DD nursed every hour and a half for a long time.  I counted up the time I spent nursing her in a day - it was 6-8 hours (she nursed for 30-45 minutes a time) at the boob every day.  I am not exaggerating.

    Every baby is different.

  •  Hi Tags! <3

That sounds like my son a lot of the time. It is so hard but just keep doing what he needs and do what you need to do to keep yourself sane. It gets better! Can you sleep while he is nursing? That is the only way I got sleep with him.

Hi, Terri! Unfortunately I can't because we're using the shield and I have to adjusted it because he has crazy energy when eating.
