Timing of Birth Announcements

When did you send out birth announcements? I have my hospital "pro" pictures (and have some definite usable ones), but our official newborn pics were this morning (and are way better than the hospital ones!) and I might not get them back for 2-3+ weeks, then you figure time for printing + mailing, so looking at 6 weeks if we go that route. When is too late to send out the birth announcements?

Our DS2 is just over a week old and we are doing combination Christmas cards/birth announcements. I don't think 6 weeks is too late at all!

I think that would be fine. Your photographer may be willing to send you a few early so you can order announcements sooner.

I'm glad someone asked this question. I actually came on this board to see if it made sense to send out this announcement for DS who was born 10/4. I just got back our newborn pics and figured by the time the announcements came and I got them all mailed out it would be time to send holiday cards anyway.

I'm still waiting to get our newborn pics in the mail. Once I get the disk we will be sending them out.

I can't remember where but I read the design should be picked out before delivery and when the pictures come you can mail them but you have up to 6 months. The later works better for me since my DD was premature by 12 weeks.

Last time we bought the hospital photos (which are AMAZING at our hospital). We didn't get any prints, just the rights to the photos, so I made them on Shutterfly and they were sent within a couple weeks. I've gotten announcements around 6 weeks from other people and didn't think anything of it.

I just ordered mine from Shutterfly and my son is 7 weeks now. I would think anytime between newborn and 6 months would be acceptable, plus you would have a multitude of pictures to choose from the later you wait. With FB and other social media sites, the chances are that most people that you would be sending announcements too would have already seen pics or visited with the LO. I think of the birth announcements as more of a keepsake than an actual way to tell people that the LO is finally here. Though this is just my opinion.

We just got our professional newborn pics, and I intend to send the announcements out this week. DD was 5 weeks old yesterday. I think anytime within the first 2 months is fine.
