Hot wheels & Matchbox play sets

My 2 year old LOVES his cars, its about the only "toy" that he plays with....we have a ton of cars and a carrying case that he pulls everywhere. Do you have any  recommendations for any race tracks or play sets in this age range? Most items i have scene are 3+....just want to make sure he can use what I may get.

TIA!

Re: Hot wheels & Matchbox play sets

  • I would go less by the age on the package and more by how he would do actually playing with it.  My ds loves cars too, and has since he was around 2.  He does fine playing with the race tracks.  Our children's museum has a Hot Wheels exhibit that is awesome, and I've seen small children playing with the tracks.

At any rate, he can always grow into it.

  • I live near the same museum & DS LOVES the hotwheels exhibit, the tracks & stuff are really easy to use & fun for kids from 2 up. So for his 3rd bday I bought him a track set from hotwheels & some more cars (we had some but they were older & beat up- the new ones are much faster I have to say).

Unfortunately, the tracks you get to set up at home are not like the ones at the museum, or maybe it is that the museum ones are all glued together & mounted, etc so they're super stable. The track set I got (I assume the style of track is the same, just different configurations?) has orange tracks that are really kind of bendy and you have to insert this flat piece in between to connect them, and really it is a huge PITA. There is no way my 3 yr old could assemble this so we end up putting it together & taking it apart all the time, and we get very frustrated b/c  sometimes it just doesn't work right & we end up having to take apart & move things and tweak, etc. Also sometimes he will not line the car up right on the track & whatnot, so he can get frustrated too...but that is something that is good for learning I think.

I plan to get him something for xmas that is a harder plastic, fit together more firmly & requires less assembly or less difficult assembly (so maybe he can do it himself). I'm hoping to find something his hot wheels can go on, I think a lot of the little people wheelies tracks are a fine size for hot wheels/matchbox cars. Those brands might also make something that is easier for toddlers to use.
