Natural Birth

Homebirth what about follow-up?

I had a natural hospital delivery w/ my first, and a natural homebirth unplanned my last time I am "low risk" I was planning on delivering at home this time but last time I went to hospital right after and still had placenta delivered there and vitals checked etc. Since that wasnt the original plan but it was quick and we enjoyed the experience. How do you handle it to be a homebirth and stay home? How do you get weight/height, "time" idk. and confirmation of birth etc. . . .We were tehnically planning on homebirth and calling 911 again and doing it the same as last time. Buuuuut idk if I want all the pricking and prodding and interupting that the nurses do overnight. . .  TIA

  • I'm a little confused. It sounds as if you're asking about all the things a trained midwife handles. I would suggest looking into homebirth midwives in your area.

  • Sorry I tend to ramble. . . so I see a midwife and they do not do home delivery and I didnt find that out til too late to find a homebirthing coach/doula/midwife my midwife delivers at a specific hospital. I would rather skip the hospital delivery and do it at home but if I take care of everything myself how do I go about just staying home, or would that not be advised cause all the other things like weight/height/time and confirmation of delivery should be handled asap via hospital. IDK maybe i'm still not making sense. I'd prefer staying home and relax and rest after delivery. Would I just call up dr afterwards to confirm delivery and have maybe a home visit to ensure all is well, cause technically when I delivered at home last time they asked me what I wanted to do and I asked to be taken in and stay over night. So I guess I did have the option to get checked out and leave. hmm. . . I'm just freaking cause I delivered 10 days early w/ my last so if things work out the same in the next 4 days  will be enduring some PAIN!!! AHHH. . . . . .ok im done
  • I'm not understanding who you would plan to birth at home and move to the hospital.  If your plan is to end up at the hospital, why not just start there?

A HBMW can do everything you are wanting to do at the hospital.

  • What you are talking about isnt really a homebirth but an unassisted childbirth. When people say "homebirth" it is assumed you will have a midwife present, which I strongly recommend. Many things can come up in childbirth, and just because last time went well doesnt mean the next time will go as smoothly. In any event, it seems silly to rush to the hospital afterwards. Why go there just to deliver the placenta? If your midwife doesnt do homebirths, then the safest place is undoubtedly the hospital.

You said your midwife delivers at a hospital; what do you have against going there for your L&D? Does it have a high c-section rate? High induction rate? Pushy nurses? If you're happy with your midwife and the hospital has a good reputation for being natural-birth friendly, why not just go there? I understand sometimes labor happens VERY fast and you don't have a chance to get to the hospital, but that's a very different situation from a planned, unassisted childbirth. I think what you're planning on doing is dangerous and quite frankly, odd. If you have an uncomplicated delivery at the hospital, you can request to go home early once they've monitored you and your baby for a few hours. I know plenty of people who have done that.

  • I would look specifcally for a certifed professional midwife  (CPM) vs. a nurse midwife. A CPM will provide what you've described in terms of being home through delivery and recovery and a post-partum visit or two.  Some CPMs will even do all prenatal visits at your home! Many CPMs will be as hands-off (or hands-on) as you'd like.

Unassisted childbirth (UC) is what it sounds like you are planning. There is a forum on mothering.com where you can gather additional information on that. It is a closed forum, so you will have to get permissions to view it.

  • Umm ok.

Idk know what "MUD" is but. . whatever. Moms come on here with concerns and experiences of there own and input from other moms. If I knew everything obviously I would be you. My experince is real and my concerns are real. If I didnt make sense to you well go to another thread, thanks.
