I had a natural hospital delivery w/ my first, and a natural homebirth unplanned my last time I am "low risk" I was planning on delivering at home this time but last time I went to hospital right after and still had placenta delivered there and vitals checked etc. Since that wasnt the original plan but it was quick and we enjoyed the experience. How do you handle it to be a homebirth and stay home? How do you get weight/height, "time" idk. and confirmation of birth etc. . . .We were tehnically planning on homebirth and calling 911 again and doing it the same as last time. Buuuuut idk if I want all the pricking and prodding and interupting that the nurses do overnight. . . TIA
Re: Homebirth what about follow-up?
I'm not understanding who you would plan to birth at home and move to the hospital. If your plan is to end up at the hospital, why not just start there?
A HBMW can do everything you are wanting to do at the hospital.
All of this.
You said your midwife delivers at a hospital; what do you have against going there for your L&D? Does it have a high c-section rate? High induction rate? Pushy nurses? If you're happy with your midwife and the hospital has a good reputation for being natural-birth friendly, why not just go there? I understand sometimes labor happens VERY fast and you don't have a chance to get to the hospital, but that's a very different situation from a planned, unassisted childbirth. I think what you're planning on doing is dangerous and quite frankly, odd. If you have an uncomplicated delivery at the hospital, you can request to go home early once they've monitored you and your baby for a few hours. I know plenty of people who have done that.
I would look specifcally for a certifed professional midwife (CPM) vs. a nurse midwife. A CPM will provide what you've described in terms of being home through delivery and recovery and a post-partum visit or two. Some CPMs will even do all prenatal visits at your home! Many CPMs will be as hands-off (or hands-on) as you'd like.
Unassisted childbirth (UC) is what it sounds like you are planning. There is a forum on mothering.com where you can gather additional information on that. It is a closed forum, so you will have to get permissions to view it.
