This is my favorite article about toys. Your post reminded me about it. I hope it's useful to you.
I rescued a waterheater box from the custodian at my school. My kindergarteners played with it everyday for weeks on end. Everyday it was something different until the point when it was broken down so much they used it as "moose meat" (we live in a rural area where that's a common meal). Before that it was a farm house, restaurant, elevator, airplane, bear cave, dinosaur shelter ...and on ...and on...One of the parents complained that it made the classroom look messy, but when they were asked to draw a picture of their favorite thing about school, her son drew the box LOL I guess he's not allowed messy play at home...

Haha! That's cute, and so true!
Henry's favorite thing to play with is my cheap plastic measuring spoon set. He also adores paper; crinkling, tearing, pushing it along the floor, waving it in the air...I just have to watch closely and be ready with something to exchange with him, because at some point he WILL try to eat it!
The best toys really do seem to be just whatever you have around the house. SO much better and more fun than "real" toys!
