White residue on bottles after boiling?

Has anyone else had this happen?  I just opened a new package of Dr. Browns bottles to wash and sterilize.  I boiled them for about 15 minutes (maybe too long?), and after I noticed that there's a white residue on every bottle.  I had to rewash them, which basically makes them unsterile again.

So what is the white film?  And would it be better to steam in the microwave to prevent this from happening?

 TIA!

Re: White residue on bottles after boiling?

  • Do you have hard water in your home?
  • Loading the player...
  • I sterilize my bottles in a microwavable sterilizer... it kept leaving spots and a white film, so I called Avent (the company that makes the sterilizer). They told me to use distilled water, rather than tap water.  Worked like a charm!

Maybe boil them in distilled water??

  • WE have well water and that is what happened with mine. I just washed them in soap and water after boiling.
