My old friends contacted me about attending a luncheon next weekend. By old, I mean that it's been a few years since I've seen them AND most of them are over 60, because it's my sorority (actually fraternity) alumnae chapter. I'm so excited to be with other people, so I gladly accepted the invitation and asked if there was a cost or if people were bringing dishes.
The response was that it was $5 a person, and that I was welcome to bring a salad if I wanted. Everyone else is bringing 2 salads with 20 copies of the recipe to share. I'm confused. To me, a salad is a bunch of vegetables on a bed of something green topped with some type of dressing and possible cheese and croutons.
I feel like an idiot, so I'm afraid to ask her what a "salad" means, so I thought I could maybe pick your brains on here. Can anyone explain this (and possibly share a link to a recipe)?

Re: What's a salad?
What about a fruit salad? Or something popular out here is a Taffy Apple Salad...or a Watergate salad??
ETA: Watergate salad: https://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/watergate-salad-53771.aspx
Also, potato salad? Macaroni salad??
By salad maybe they just mean a dish served cold? You could take a green salad, pasta salad, potato salad or a fruit salad.
(The word salad lost all meaning while I was typing that last sentence.)

To add to the mix as well: chicken salad, tuna salad, shrimp salad, waldorf salad. You could probably do a pretty affordable but nice chef salad.
I think its odd that its a "bring a salad" as opposed to a cold dish lol.

Haha Steel, I honestly didn't laugh at you! I would have wondered the same thing...like, "what are we going to do with 20 of the same green salads?!" But now you see your possibilities are endless! Haha...
Also, Orriskitten, now I am craving a good chicken or shrimp salad. The only problem I have with all the recipes for chicken salad online, are that they all have grapes/fruit and nuts in them, and I'm not a fan of fruit in my salad/s. Anyone have a tasty chicken salad recipe for me, minus the fruit?

My favorite salad to bring is pasta salad. A box of cooked rotini (tricolor is prettiest) or tortellini; a few bell peppers, chopped; chopped broccoli florets (I like to steam it just a bit); grape tomatoes; chunks of cheese; Italian dressing and parmesan cheese. Chill it before serving.
I rarely end up taking home the leftovers.
