My DH and I would like to adopt a special needs waiting child from foster care. I contacted Adopt Us Kids, who put me in touch with our state adoption unit, they gave me the number of my county and I spoke to a lovely woman there who set us up to start classes in January.
I was sent the foster manual for my county and I realized I'm a little confused - once we take the classes, are approved and home studied I know that there is an adoption worker in our county. I'm assuming her job is to find homes for children in our county. If there are none (our area does not have many children in care happily) how do we become available to children in all counties? For that matter are you able to submit to national photolistings or if you go through the county are you only available for that county?
Does anyone have any experience with this? I'm wondering if maybe what we should be doing is getting a home study done by a private company and then submitting it to the various special needs organizations but then I know we would still need the foster classes - maybe I'm overthinking?
Re: Confused on FC and SN Adoption
I've wondered this myself. I'm not sure if anyone here has taken this route, but I"ll be following this post to see if anyone knows the answer. I keep hearing that adopting a waiting child from foster care across state lines is possible and fast, but I don't know the first thing about how it's done.
Thanks for asking. I hope someone can clarify this for us!
That does help, thank you! Do you mind if I ask, are you using a private or public agency?
That is kind of what I was thinking we might need to do, but I can't find a private agency that works with foster care in our area. The ones listed by my state have all said that they don't work with foster care and seem confused as to why they are listed on the state website. Maybe I'll do some further research just to be sure, thank you so much for the info!!
