October 2011 Moms

Paging all working moms!

What does your daily schedule look like? I feel like our household is in a vicious cycle and that it kind of sucks. I am curious to know what your day looks like and maybe I can steal some ideas to improve our schedule. This is our day...

6:00-6:40: Wake up, feed the dogs and give them their meds and fresh water. Clean up any doggy accidents or items they have destroyed. Make coffee and do any dishes that were not done the night before. Maybe dry or fold some laundry if there is some.

6:40-7:00: Drink 2 cups of coffee while I am on TB and checking/responding to email (usually work related)

7:00-7:30: Take a shower and do my makeup

7:30-8:15: Yell at DH to get his azz up and feed DS. I run around the house like a chicken with my head cut off trying to get everything together, eat half a bagel, get dressed, and finish drying my hair. I usually have to get DS dressed too. Yell at DH to feed the cat. I am usually pretty pissed off by now because I am now having another late day yet again.

8:15-9:00: Get all of our crap in the car, get DS strapped in and drop him off at daycare.

9:15-4:30:Work...I really should be staying until at least 5:15 but since I do so much work related stuff at home I say screw it and leave.

4:30-5:30: Pick up DS, stop at the store if necessary, and drive home.

5:30-6:00: Put away all of our stuff from the day and deal with any other misc. things like mail.

6:00-7:30ish: Someone is making dinner (lately DH). Wondering why it takes us 1.5 hours to make a meal that should only take 20 mins. Try to empty the dishwasher when DS isn't looking.

7:30-8:00: Eat dinner then try to clean up at least somewhat before the dogs get to it.

8:00-9:00: Crash on the couch and watch a bit of TV while DS plays. I am usually exhausted by then.

9:00-9:45: Get DS ready for bed and put him to bed...clean up his toys that are all over the house and try to find the missing blocks, rings, etc. before the dogs eat them.

9:45-10:00: Get myself ready for bed and head up to the bedroom.

10:00-10:30: Watch the news. No sexy time...I am beat. Go to sleep.

Approx. 2am: Wake up because DH woke me up, DS is making noise in his sleep which I hear through the monitor, or wake up in a panic for some unknown reason. Take 30 mins to get back to sleep.

Re: Paging all working moms!

  • I'm no help ... we're hanging on by the skin of our teeth. Our house is a disaster, I feel totally disorganized, and its a chaotic rush just to get ourselves clean and fed.

I've been trying to find some more crock pot and quick recipes for dinner since everything I cooked before E was born was too fancy and time consuming to do now. I'm struggling with this since I feel like most of the quick and easy food is also junk. If I see one more can of condensed cream of mushroom soup, I'm going to $hit myself.

620am - have dh wake ds up and get him ready

    645am - nurse DS

    7am - leave for work/daycare drop off

7:15am - drop DS off at daycare

    7:30am - get to work

    4pm - pick DS up

4:30pm-530 - get home, change clothes relax for a bit, play with DS

    5:30-6:15 - cook dinner

6:15-645 - eat dinner (DH gets home around this time)

6:45-730 - DH does bath and getting DS ready for bed while I do the dishes. DS goes down at 730

730-8pm - get stuff ready for tomorrow

    8pm-9pm - watch tv, read

9pm (maybe 930 pm some nights) - go to bed

then wake up a billion times over night due to some random reason, DS, and the cat. Then do it all over.

Laughing my azz off at this one!  I can't even get organized enough to utilize the crock pot more. I used it several times last week but haven't been able to get anything together this week at all.

  • Yup!  It sounds like our vicious cycle as well.

4/5or 6am:  P wakes up.  After some milk, he falls back to sleep.

    5:30am:  DH leaves for work.

7am:  I roll out of bed, feed the mutt, pour some coffee, and "straighten up" (all while hoping P stays asleep).

7:30am:  My parents arrive for the day.  After chatting with them for about 5 or 10 mins, I try to get the cofusing harness on my dog and after several attempts, I am able to take the dog out for peepees and poopies.

Between 7:30 - 7:50am:  P wakes up.  I get his breakfast ready and my parents feed him while I attempt to get in the shower.

Finally at 8am:  I shower and rush to get my make-up on and get dressed.

8:30am:  I am officially late to work and have yet to leave the house.

8:40am:  I walk out the door, only to walk right back in because I forgot SOMETHING.  Usually, my coffee or lunch.

8:45 - 12pm:  I am at work.  I use the term "work" loosely.

12pm - 1pm:  I head home for lunch to give my parents a "break".  I choke down my lunch and clean up the house.

5pm:  Head home from work (DH is usually home by now and my parents have left).  Help feed P, make dinner, feed the dog, clean the house, etc.

6:30-7pm:  P goes to sleep and we manage to eat in peace.

7:15 - 9pm:  Lay on the couch and watch tv while DH does his studying (he's heading to Nursing school in September).

9pm:  Get in bed and play Songpop until my eyes get tired.

9:30-10pm:  Zzzzzz.  (Sexy time?  Nah.  I prefer morning sex)

  • Mine varies depending on if I'm in court or not.  But on a typical, no-court morning it looks a little like this:

Sometime between 1 and 5:30am: Wake up and feed LBB. Go back to sleep.

Sometime between 6 and 6:30am: LBB wakes up for the day, so we all get up.  I feed LBB, DH walks the dog.

Sometime between 6:30 and 6:45ish: DH and I get ready for work.  LBB plays with his toys in our bedroom while we take turns showering, getting dressed, I do my hair and makeup.

7:30am: breakfast and DH heads out to work.

7:45am: I clean up breakfast, pull LBB's milk and our lunches from the fridge and put them in our respective bags.  I pack up my pump stuff that's been on the drying rack over night.

8:00am: I get LBB dressed, last nursing session before daycare, then we brush our teeth and hair, and put on our shoes.

8:30-8:50am: Head out and drop LBB off at daycare.

    9am-5pm: Work

5-5:30pm: Pick LBB up from daycare

5:30-5:38pm: Give the dog a quick walk, DH gets home.

5:50- 6:30pm: Go for a run.  DH and LBB go for a walk on the trail where I run, so I meet up with them on my way back home and we all walk home together.

    6:30pm: Heat up/cook dinner

    6:50pm: Dinner time

7:20pm: I blog while DH gets LBB ready for bed (bath and story time)

7:40pm: Last nursing session before bed, then I either sing LBB a song or tell him a story and he's out.

8:00pm-10:00pm: Finish blogging, make our lunches for the next day, make or prep dinner for the next day.  All while watching some TV with DH.

10pm: Washup and ready for bed.

ETA: My mom used to put something in the crock pot and let it cook overnight, stick it in the fridge and just reheat it real quick at dinner time.

  • I'm jealous of all of you who leave at 8!

    5:30 to 6:00 wake up/DH shower/dressed
    6:00 to 6:15 get dressed/do my hair
6:10 DH gets DS up, gives DS bottle and gets DS ready for daycare
6:15 DH takes DS to daycare and then goes to work
6:25 I leave for work commute can be 45 min to 1.5 hours depending on traffic
    7;454:30 work
5:30 pick up DS from daycare
6:00 get home, give DS snack or dinner, wish I could take a nap
6:20 bath/shower with DS since he refuses to sit down in the tub. Try awkwardly to shave my legs with him playing by my feet.
6:30 DH home, DS starts screaming for dadada since he prefers DH over me
7:00 try to find something for dinner or just give up and eat cereal/fast food
7:30 give DS milk and try to trick him into going to sleep
8:30 to 9:00 fight ninja child and leave his room victorious when he finally falls asleep
9:00 to 10:30 catch up on DVR shows, pump weaning off so only once every 3 days now
    10:30 go to bed.

  • My schedule varies every day, but DH and I decide each Sunday who is doing drop off and pick up duties each day that week.  More often than not I drop off and he picks up.

715am - wake up DS if not already up, change him, feed him

8am - drop DS off at daycare

    815am - head to work

7pm - head home (DH usually picks up DS from daycare bc I tend to have to work late)

715pm - Give DS kisses and put him to bed

730pm - Find something to eat for dinner, prepare DS's food for the next day

    8pm - Finish work

    930pm/10pm - Head to bed

Agreed! I have discussed this with him, yelled at him, cried at him, and pleaded with him yet he still doesn't get up usually. The last week or so he has finally gotten up between 7 and 7:45 if DS waked up crying. After seeing everyone else's posts it looks like their DH does a lot more to help in the morning. My DH, if he does get up before 8 am, will give DS cheerios and a bottle then sit and read the newspaper. This morning I told him "Uh...this is a perfect time to feed the cat and give kitty his meds rather than read the paper". He finally got up and did it. I need to have another "come to Jesus" talk with him.

  • I don't know if mine will help, but here it goes:

5:15 - 6:00 - wake up, get showered and dressed, make lunch and coffee, get everything in the car

6:00 - 6:15 - get up and get DD ready, load DD into the car, leave house with half-azz makeup and hairdo

    6:15 - 6:50 - drive to daycare

    6:50 - 7:00 - drive to work

7:10-2:02 - work (I teach so that is what time the bell rings ha ha)

2:02 - 2:30 - do school work, sometimes procrastinate and bumps instead (::checks time, yup, right on schedule::)

    2:30 - 3:30 - go to the gym

    3:45 - pick up DD

4:00 - 4:45 - drive home if no traffic, with traffic it's more like an hour

4:45 - hang with DD, maybe go out for a walk or try to get dinner started

    5:30 - DD eats dinner

    7:00 - DD's bedtime

7:00 - H gets home, finish cooking dinner, he watches TV while I grade papers or do grad school work

9:30 - 10:00 bedtime (sometimes earlier depending on the night)

My wake up calls to him vary depending on how long it takes him to get up. Some days I hit the intercom button on the monitor and say "It is time to get up" and sometimes he does. Other days I go upstairs and  tell him "you need to get up" which he may or may not do. Finally I have the "Get your frucking azz out of bed now! I am so sick of this sh*t!" The last one usually results in him making his way downstairs within the next 10 minutes.

ETA: I would love to use the cup of cold water but then it would just be another thing for me to deal with because he wouldn't clean it up or dry the sheets :( Maybe as long as it only landed on his side of the bed then it would be OK since he would be the only one affected.

  • I only work part time (it's amaaazing) but when I look at your schedule this is what I see:

do your grocery shopping as much as possible on the weekends instead. have a meal plan, buy everything you need, and do any prep you can ahead. it also really helps to have a freezer stocked with easy dinners.

make your DH get up when you do. It sucks but a second pair of hands REALLY helps.

I've been trying to pick out my clothes and havd DDs bag packed the night before.

None of these things always happen but they do help.

    Here's our rough routine;

DD nurses twice throughout the nice, once around 1 and again somewhere from 4-6.  She has been sleeping until 7:15 but not always.

DH and I get up around 6:30-6:45. Make tea, get baby stuff ready that we didn't do the night before, let dog out and feed him.

We wake DD up and dress her taking turns between getting ourselves ready and getting her ready.

7:30 leave the house. drop off DH at bus stop, drop DD at daycare.

7:50 I catch my bus to work.

    8- pump

    office work and teaching

    11:30 pump again

1: 00 Pick DD up from daycare

1:30-3 get DD to nap in there somewhere and feed myself lunch, clean as much of the house as I can, and prep as much of dinner as I can.

5:00 pick up DH at work

    6ish dinner

    6:30-7 bath, books, jammies, boobies

7:15-7:30 we've been doing a family walk around the block. DH carries DD and she usually passes out on him.  (She is so attached to me at sleep time and we're hoping this will help her be more open to him for night soothing.)

after the walk we bring her home and if she hasn't fallen asleep I put her back on the boob and rock her down.

the rest of the evening is packing stuff up for tomorrow, cleaning, watching netflix and reading.

10:30 bedtime but usually more like 11.

  • Checking out skinnytaste.com now and I am sure I will be pinning some of these. I have used a few recipes for crock pot dishes that I found on Pinterest and they have been great. I need to be more organized like Papps so I can make several meals on a weekend and freeze them down.

Papps...what is the best method you have found to freeze down dishes you have made? Do they ever get freezer burned? I regularly buy larger quantities of meat and wrap it in freezer paper or I made some sauces and freeze those in freezer bags but I have never done a meal before.

  • I am soooooo jealous of most of your work schedules !

5:30am- Wake up, start making my coffee in the Keurig, fill a bottle with milk, and bring it into our room. Grab DD, bring her to DH (half asleep) and have him give DD the milk while I go shower/get dressed

5:50-6:00am- Grab DD from DH and take her to her room to get her changed, dressed & do her hair. This always consists of a fight b/c DD is a lazy biotch and never wants to get up.

6:00-6:10am (depending on how much DD fought me): Take her back into the bedroom and both us kiss DH goodbye. (DH gets up at 6:15 to take the dogs out and get himself showered/ready).

6:10/6:15: Grab my coffee from the Keurig and we are out the door!

6:20/6:25am: Go through the drive through of Dunks to get coffee #2. I have it planned so that coffee #1 is consumed on my way to drop DD off and by the time I drop her off, coffee#2 is cool enough to drink.

6:40/6:45am: Arrive at my parents' house to drop off DD (they run an in-home daycare). Tell my mom how DD's night was & shoot the shiiit for a bit.

7:00am (on the dot...a grandfather clock bings to let me know it's time to go): Kiss DD good bye and head to work

    7:15-5:00: Work Sad

    5:15/5:30: Pick up DD

6:00ish: Arrive home, unless I decided to go to the gym. (DH gets home before me and takes the dogs out as soon as he gets home)

    6:30ish: Dinner

    7:00: DD's play/bath time

8:00: Change DD into pj's and cuddle on the couch while watching some trashy reality tv

    9:30/10ish: Bedtime

  • I wake up around 6:45am: Get dressed, and get bottle ready

7:15 am: LO wakes up, dress him and give him first bottle (usually in front of TV :-) and get bottles ready for Daycare

    7:30am Feed LO

    7:45-8am Drop of LO

    8:15-4:30: Work

    4:45 pm Pick up LO

5pm: Make a dinner for LO (Usually left overs from night before and heat up)

    5:30-6pm: Play with LO

    6pm: Final bottle

    6:30pm: Bath time

7pm: Bedtime and then pick up mess from LO

7:15-8pm Throw is load of laundry and start making dinner

8:00pm: Hubby and I make dinner, empty and fill dishwasher

8:15pm: Relax and maybe fold laundry in dryer

10pm: Take shower and get ready for next day

    10:30pm: Bedtime

On the weekends I will usually tackle some deep cleaning like floors, bathrooms, and more laundry when LO is napping and play with him.

Some days it is all me since my husband is in college three nights a week and works 6 days a week, but on the nights he is here he will do bathtime and play with LO so I can either take a break or get something cleaned.

  • 5:40- I wake up, shower, and get ready.

6:30-if DD isn't awake yet, which she usually is, we go get her and I nurse her. We get her ready. DH packs her food for daycare and gets her sippy cups ready.

    7:10- leave the house

7:20-drop DD off at sitters and race to work.

    7:30-4:20- work

4:30- pick up DD from sitters.

4:40-5ish (depends on how long I stay and talk to my SIL who is the babysitter) arrive home.

5:30-6- I go running, while DH cooks dinner.

    6:15- ddinner

play time until bath and bed time. Usually in bed by 8:30.

  • I used to swear it would be easier to be a working mom than a fulltime student /sahm.

Damn. I was absolutely wrong. You all are awesome.

Whittier, that was very kind of you! Being a full time student is rough too because you have to find time to squeeze studying in there as well.

Papps, thanks so much for the info on how to freeze down meals properly. I am definitely going to try this. I do have a habit of cooking too much food... usually enough for DH's midnight snack and my lunch the next day. It would be so easy to make just a little more than I already do and freeze it for a meal the following week.

I commend all of you ladies for keeping up your hectic lifestyle!

  • Oh. my. gosh.  You are all amazing women!  I am still trying to figure out this working full time thing.  I've only been doing it the last 2 months and I feel like I'm getting my azzzz handed to me everyday.  I hope someday to be as organized and put together as you ladies or I could just quit my job.  Either way would be great!! :)

  • 7-7:30 DD wakes up, one of us goes up to get her... I try to get MH to do it most days so I can have a little extra sleep... He gets to sleep in on Thursdays. I do Mondays, occasionally Fridays.(Tues & weds he has to work, which means usually Layla wakes up extra early those days for me - joy)

    8:30 - breakfast

    9- leave for school

11:30 - home from school, scarf down lunch

    12-5 Work

    5- come home, make supper

    6:00 eat supper

    6:30-7 Bathtime, playtime

    7:30-8 bedtime for Layla

    8-11 Homework, FB, TB

11- I strive to be in bed by 11, most nights lately it's later b/c I've been so busy or drank way too much caffiene during the day and can't sleep (as is the case tonight, plus my mind is racing for Layla's party tomorrow. I know i'm forgetting something!

  • I'm jealous of everyone's bed time! I have a bad habit of passing out in front of the tv around 9, which isn't so great when I'm a showeratnight kind of person. I will normally wake up around midnight and drag my azz to the shower. While waiting for my hair to dry i try to clean up around the house, or sometimes I doze off and on until I can do something with my hair. Then I'm in bed at 130 or 2...and wake up at 530. :

  • 5:15am ? wake up, shower, take dog out, pack breakfast/lunch

6:00am- wake DD up and nurse her quickly before running out the door (DH gets up when I wake DD up, he does breakfast with DD and takes her to daycare)

7:10am- get to work a few minutes late (after an hour commute)

    3:15pm- leave work

3:45pm- pick DD up from daycare on the way home

4:20pm- get home, change clothes, take dog out

4:30pm-5:30pm- spend some time with DD, playing, reading, etc

5:30pm- feed DD and then some more play time

6:15pm- Dh gets home from work on his ?early? nights, two nights a week he doesn?t get home until after 8pm

    6:30pm- bath

    6:45pm-7pm- bedtime routine

    7pm- DD to bed

7:15pm- grab something to eat, I rarely really make dinner anymore

7pm-11:30pm- work on my travel agent business

11:30pm- crash and pray DD doesn?t wake up

Note what IS NOT included- making dinner, cleaning the house, doing laundry? yeah, my house is a disaster and I can never catch up on getting it in order. I try to go grocery shopping, laundry and as much cleaning as I can over the weekend.

  • I wouldn't say our routine is great, since I am constantly feeling like I am behind, but most days it is like this:

5am: I get up, get myself completely ready for work, eat breakfast, pack my work bag and DD's daycare bag with lunches, diapers, etc, put all bags in the car.

6:15: wake up DD, get her dressed, comb her hair (this gets it's own mention because it takes forever lately)

    6:30-7am play with DD

7am: leave the house, drop DD at daycare and head to work

    8am-5pm: work

5:45 get home, cook dinner, wash lunch box tupperware and sippys

    6:15: eat dinner

    6:45 Bath time

7pm get pjs on, read books, sing songs, go to bed

    7:30 go workout

8:45: watch some TV, eat if I haven't already-stuff diapers and fold laundry

    10pm shower and bed

Notice that there is no cleaning or picking up listed. That is why I am living in a stye right now.

  • do you live in MY home?!

i COMPLETELY have the same schedule and I am sssooo exhausted :(
