Worried About DS Not Eating Finger Foods

DS is small and has always been a tough eater...he hasn't ever even been a huge fan of the bottle.  It took him a while to get used to purees and he's very picky about flavor...the only thing he LOVES are bananas and yogurt.  Veggies are hit or miss and meat or anything savory is a no-go.

My pedi is conservative and didn't push it and I'll admit, I was scared of choking, so I didn't start giving him finger foods until about 9 months, and for a couple months only puffs (which he had no interest in) and the occassional cut up food like fruit.  But, for the past month I've consistently been giving him a variety of finger foods 3x per day at every meal.

He still gags a lot and the only thing he'll really pick up and eat himself are yogurt melts, and he'll suck on waffles/toast.  But he won't pick up small pieces, and won't really even eat things in large strips, just suck on them.

I googled and freaked myself out!  Now I'm worried he has some kind of developmental delay and I should be looking into early intervention.  Does anyone have any advice/experience?  Thanks!

  • Do you see him using a pincher grasp to pick up smaller items that aren't food?

Yep...he'll use it to eat yogurt melts (although he sometimes drops them, he's not GREAT at it).

  • I would bring it up to the pedi and see what they say. Some babies are a little slower at it especially if he didn't have a chance to practice until he was older. I wouldn't worry unless the pedi seems concerned.

  • Well, that is good that he is using the pincher grasp. Honestly, if you only started on table food at nine months and then for a couple months after that only gave him puffs I imagine he just needs time to learn how to eat other food. I wouldn't be overly worried but I would bring it up with the pedi.
