Pregnant after 35

Baby-safe migraine remedies?

Normally, I'd take Excedrin or prescription meds. Obviously, that's no longer an option. Anyone have anything that works for them?

At this point, I'm looking at spending the rest of the afternoon in a dark room with a cold cloth on my forehead, praying for oblivion...

Re: Baby-safe migraine remedies?

  • No go. I don't drink soda. And I don't do caffeine-- even before I was pregnant (except for what is in Excedrin, which I can't take because of the aspirin.)

  • I got super bad headaches at during first tri.  I used Tiger Balm on my temples and it really helped.  Maybe you could try that?

  • I would never have thought of that. I will try it. Thank you!

  • Ice pack to the nape of the neck, increase fluid intake, and head massage.  Feel better soon, headaches during pregnancy are tough, I can't imagine having a migraine.  Ugh!

  • Migraines are horrid. My ob prescribed Fioricet, although I have a generic version that was a great deal cheaper than the brand name. I have used it and it does help.

  • I also never drank caffeine before but it was the only thing that worked to relieve my headaches/migraines in 1st tri. Try chocolate if not soda or tea - I still eat a small Hershey bar midday to keep avoiding the headaches.

  • Excederin tension headache is just acetaminophen and caffeine.
  • I've just been taking tylenol for the headaches but that probably won't be strong enough for a migraine. Hope your feeling better!

  • The only over-the-counter med you can take is plain old Tylenol, which probably won't help much.  That's one of the suckiest parts of pregnancy - the lack of pain relief!  You might want to ask your doc if there's anything prescription they can give you.  Maybe they can give you a stronger dose of Tylenol at least.  Good luck!

  • I have done self acupressure for migraines in the past, and it has been super helpful. Google that, but be sure to check to see if any of the pressure points are not recommended during pregnancy. I seem to remember that the point between the thumb and forefinger is one no-no spot during pregnancy.

  • I luckily only had one (mild) migraine when I was pregnant. When I called the nurse line, they suggested taking 2 extra strength tylenols and drinking really strong coffee or a couple of cans of caffeinated soda.

I have also found the following things to be helpful:

Dark room, cold cloth (as all migraneurs know)

Apply tiger balm, sobra, or other muscle relaxant balms to back of neck below ears, upper shoulders where they meet the neck, and temples/brows.

Fold one or both arms over your head/over your eyes.

Run a warm bath, get in, plug your nose, and keep your head under water for as long as you can. Repeat over and over. (I find the pressure under the water really helps).

If worst comes to worst, make yourself throw up.
