BP and induction - Full Term

It looks like a few of the girls from the October board are being sent to L&D for an immediate induction because of "high blood pressure".  One said her BP was 138/88.  From what I see on Dr. Google, your BP is considered high if it's over 140/90.

I've always had normal to low BP.  Just once was it a little on the high side, and they re-checked it later in the appointment to find it went down.

Just curious if any of you have run into this? Did you have your OB or midwife suggest an induction because of one high BP reading?  What is considered high when you're 40+ weeks?

  • TBH I think a lot of times they're looking for a reason to induce.  Not to mention most practices seem to be very reactionary rather than cautiously waiting to see what happens.  Of course there are reasons why they're like this, but I think there needs to be a good balance there.

  • I think high BP can be a relative thing. I was kept long at my 38 week appointment because my BP was 126/84. That's considered pretty normal range, but for me, it was higher than the doctor wanted to see, since my BP is usually considerably lower than that. I managed to keep it within a "reasonable" range until I went into labor on my own, but I'm pretty sure my doctor would have had major concerns if my BP had been 138/88 before delivery.

  • Alot of times it depends on your normal BP. There is a set standard of 140/90 but if your normal is 110/60 then 130/80  can be thought of as high.

  • From what I was told...they don't like to go over 140/90 because of potential harm the the baby etc. But if its just a bit high or creaping ...they'll watch it. Mine was rising for a while, then came back down,  so no nduction.

  • The important thing here to remember what is that persons normal baseline BP. If my BP normaly runs say for example 110/50 then 138/88 is a jump that needs to be looked into. If your blood pressure continues to stay high and/or get higher there is a greater risk for pre-e which could turn into eclampsia which is when the mother will start to have seizures. And unfortunately with pre-e the treatment for it if not able to be controlled with activity restriction and/or meds is delivery which usually ends up being induction.

I agree with this. My cousin just had her baby about 2 weeks ago... she went in for her 40 week appointment and this exact thing happened. They broke her water and LUCKILY her body was ready to have the baby and she had a wonderful birth experience. The part that I thought was a red flag was her OB was leaving for vacation the next day..... how convenient.....

  • I actually haven't posted on this board before but came here looking to see if someone has gone through this.  My blood pressure was elevated and is pretty labile. They r/o pre-e and diagnosed me with gestational htn.  I was started on BP meds yesterday and informed if the baby doesn't arrive on her own by 39 weeks they will induce me.

I really don't want to be induced unless medically necessary.  I  really wanted to have an all natural/unmedicated birth.  Again, just looking to see what others have been through. Obviously I would do whatever I had to for the safety of my baby.  That's my number one priority.
