Babies: 9 - 12 Months

stimulating / entertaining baby

What do you do to stimulate and teach your baby at this stage? I'm looking for some ideas because right now this is all we do with her and I know there's more:

playing on the floor with her and some of her toys

her new thing is to pull up on furniture so we're there to catch her and give her toys to bang on things

she has a little stage with music and lights and a mirror that she LOVES. she pulls up on it, she bangs on the buttons and uses other toys to bang on it.

we try to hold her so she can practice walking and she really loves that too.

I try to take her to different rooms and show her different things, remote, hairbrush, toothbrush, stuff with different textures, diff sizes, etc... i tell her what they are and show her what to do with them.

What the heck else can I do with her to teach her stuff - I'm out of ideas so what do you do with your child?

Re: stimulating / entertaining baby

  • Just let her explore.  That's all they want to do at that age.  Most days, Jude just plays with his toys, I sing to him, we dance around, take walks, hang out with family, go to the store.. whatever.  They really don't need much to be entertained.
  • Loading the player...
  • I sing and dance with her and for her. I also read to her and overall just let her take the lead. I also let her play w the dogs...supervised of course.
  • Read. DD loves her touch-and-feel books most right now.
  • Livi loves the grocery store.  She could ride around in the cart for hours just checking things out.
  • I let DS go around the house and find things to explore. I will be right behind him. I verbally tell him what he has in his hands. We talk to him a ton. We are working on his words. he can say some things, but we still work with him on others.
  • Tre loves to be under a blanket with me sort of like a fort so I started making forts for him. I also make obstacle courses with pillows and chairs so he has things to crawl over, under and through. I let him smell different things like pickle juice, garlic, onion, syrup, vanilla etc. and I tell him what it is and if its sweet and such. I also just started rotating toys and limiting how many I have out for him. I think he was overstimulated by the tons of toys. He'd  mainly pull them out of his toy box and make a huge mess with them and then want me to entertain him but now w/ less toys he actually plays with them for a little while. He also loves the grocery store lots of lights and people. And he loves to go outside when its not raining. I try to let him walk and I even let him crawl on the pavement so long as he has jeans on. He loves it and I just watch him close and wash his hands when we come inside. Yesterday I went out to dinner w/ my sisters and they let him color with the crayons that the restaurant set out for him. I've never let him do this, but he loved it and naturally they were helping him with the crayon. Hope all this helps. I know it can seem a little mundane sometimes.
