L's birthday party is finally over and done, but it almost didn't happen! We just planned a small affair with MH and I and the IL's. MH and I both had to work on the 13th so the party was scheduled for the 10th, but she came down with a cold and fever so we postponed to the 17th. When she's sick L gets VERY clingy towards me, so all the while I was trying to prep for the party and bake her cake she was hanging off my leg wailing or demanding that I carry her. I swear it took 10 hours to make that darn cake! I was still frosting it 30 minutes before the IL's were due to arrive, when MH comes home sans grandparents and says bad news, he's had a fight with MIL for being late picking them up and they're not coming!
I completely lost it, of course, but I felt so defeated with L sitting there crying in her dress that I just said whatever, we'll order a pizza and celebrate with just the three of us. I couldn't believe they'd not come to their own granddaughter's birthday over something so fickle. Well, 30 minutes later we get a text from FIL apologizing for MIL and saying they're on their way by cab. The pizza was already ordered...we had originally planned on going out for sushi...so we just went with that. In the end the party was okay and L enjoyed her new stuff, which is all that really matters.

My attempt at a formal portrait. The focus didn't really work.

My favorite.

Not really knowing what to make of the cake! She picked at it daintily rather than smash it, but at least she ate some. She was NOT happy when she swallowed an MandM!

The only smile we got the whole evening.

The morning after. She really loves this 10 dollar cardboard house from TRU.

If I read your post correctly, you said you made the cake yourself? That is amazing! It came out so good!
L is absolutely adorable with the pigtails, and I think the "professional" photo you took came out great :-)
There will always be drama with MIL's, I swear.
Happy Birthday!
That looks like a sweet $10 house by the way!
