So, by chance I ran out of milk a few days ago and had yet to go to the store to pick up more. So, for the past few days DS has either had water or juice to drink.
We noticed his behavior/mood has been very good for the past few days, also his transitioning & concentration and listening to direction has been excellent for the most part. Therapy has been going very well too...
Now, I gave him milk yesterday for lunch and in three hours we were at the store - and the meltdown was uncontrollable - I decided to "abandon ship" and leave the store.
When we got home, I put him in his room for quiet time - for the both of us to calm down and reset.
After, I sat him down and I spoke to him as I would any person (his comprehension is excellent for his age - he has a speech delay). I asked him to tell me why he misbehaved in the store...he said that his butt hurt him & his belly.
This led me to believe that he is having a reaction to the milk.
Thoughts on this?
Re: Thoughts on Food Allergies?
My younger DD is lactose intolerant and she gets an upset stomach and diarrhea if she has milk or ice cream. You could try lactose-free milk and see how he does with that.
If you truly think he has an allergy I would get a referral to an allergist. My older DD is severely allergic to peanuts/tree nuts and it sucks. Having to eliminate major food groups is a huge PITA, and I wouldn't do it unless it was absolutely necessary. She often can't eat food at parties/school functions, and traveling is very difficult.
DS has food intolerances, one of them being milk. There is a drastic change in his behaviour if he even has a trace of it. If you don't feel too weird about it, you might want to look at your son's anus. DS used to get a bright red ring around his anus when he had eaten something with milk in it.
We went through allergy testing with him (both blood and skin testing) and it showed he is not allergic. While I'm glad it's not a true allergy, we do have to be very diligent about what he eats or we will end up regretting it.
It can take up to two weeks for the milk to clear your son's system.
